NEW YORK Rue McClanahan, the Emmy-winning actress who brought the sexually liberated Southern belle Blanche Devereaux to life on the hit TV series "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 76.
Her manager Barbara Lawrence said McClanahan died Thursday at 1am of a stroke.
She had undergone treatment for breast cancer in 1997 and later lectured to cancer support groups on "aging gracefully." In 2009, she had heart bypass surgery.
McClanahan had an active career in off-Broadway and regional stages in the 1960s before she was tapped for TV in the 1970s for the key best-friend character on the hit series "Maude," starring Beatrice Arthur.
But her most loved role came in 1985 when she co-starred with Arthur, Betty White, and Estelle Getty in "The Golden Girls," a runaway hit that broke the sitcom mold by focusing on the foibles of four aging and frequently eccentric women living together in Miami.

I will really mourn when Betty goes. That woman is hilarious, so spunky. I love her and wish she was my grandmother (okay...all mine died before I was born, so I didn’t even know them).
Sad for Rue. She played her character great.
Yes, RIP, and all that. You had a nice run, yada, yada, yada....
Step back for a moment, though, and think about what her defining moment in her career was; a very promiscuous old lady who had no qualms about spreadin’ ‘em for the guys. We wonder why America is heading down the $hitter. Look no further than here.....
My mom told me last week that Betty White was the only golden girl still alive and she is usually never wrong about stuff like this! I just bought Golden Girls seasons 1 and 2 last week and I have been watching it all this time thinking Betty White is the only one still alive!
Betty White= "Ellen" Rue = "Fran"
maybe your mom has a little 6th sense..
Bea Arthur died about a year ago.
BETTY WHITE is the last of the Golden Girls now. That show was always fun and Rue and Betty were the funniest of the bunch.
Yes I was thinking the same thing because my mom has an uncanny 6th sense.
RIP Blanche... I remember the episode when she was outvoted by the other three ladies, she said, “My daddy was right. They shouldn’t have let women vote!” LOL
Heh. :) I hope so.
Betty White is now the last of the Golden Girls.
RIP, Miss McClanahan.
Betty White will live to be 150!
Have any of you seen that “All in The Family” episode she was in? Edith sent a letter to a magazine not knowing she contacted a couple who was into swinging, and Rue Mclanahan was the wife in that couple. That was hysterical!
