I actually stayed in a place like this. It was an Econo Lodge near Camden, NJ. It wasn't filthy, but there was a lot of activity inside and outside the place. Didn't sleep much.....maybe 1hr total all night.
Norman Bates got nothing on the person on which he was based, Ed Gein. If you aren’t familiar with ol’ Ed, do a quick search.
i had to spend time in clifton nj due to a client... stayed @ the la quinta @ rt 3 and 21. a real peach of a place. more than once i awoke to a ‘rodent’ running across my bed (caught it one night). the whole area is a real freakin cesspool and should be closed down and fire bombed. i mean the entire 10 mile radius. some friends staying at a hotel down in secacus told how they had the ‘towel lock’ their doors because people would break-in in the middle of the night to rob them.
funny thing was, just before i was placed there... i was in estonia. considered just above 3rd world by europeans. much safer and cleaner. and before that, i was in riyadh, saudi arabia. the compound was VERY clean and the people were polite (except the ones passing on the street that would spot you... then they’d practice their english of choice). strangely, i felt safer in riyadh with the AQ types attacking stuff all around me than i did in clifton nj.
it was cheaper and the food was better... in the middle of the dessert.
new jersey just s*cks.
go figure.
I was once re-routed to Phoenix by a mechanical problem on a flight from Denver to San Diego. The airline put me up in a seedy hotel near Sky Harbor. When I got into my nasty room, the first thing I noticed was a large safe in the entrance to my room. Then, I attempted to go get something to eat at the only available place near-by, a 7-11. The Denny’s next door to the hotel was closed due to prostitution. The guy at the office offered to drive me down there in the hotel shuttle, as it was too dangerous for me to walk. It was 1/2 of a block away! I’m 6’3”, and 210 pounds! He said I shouldn’t chance it. I was never so glad to arrive the next morning in San Diego.
I wasn't sure if Memphis was a tough town, or the guy was a serious trouble magnet. Since I was staying at the downtown Crowne Plaza, I wasn't worried about the accomodations. That is, until the fire alarm went off at 3am. It wasn't a glitch or drill.
bttt
I think it was outside of Portland, Orgeon. The motel had a wall with black iron bars all the way around. The rooms (very small) were in a open rectangle around the parking lot.
In the center of the lot was a small booth where the lady behind the plexi-glass and bars took your money. No credit card as I recall.
LOTS of folks coming and going. Actually some good looking women of the evening.
The Gobbler. Love it. Reminds me of the neighbor’s house when I was a kid.
My wife and I spent a weekend in the Poconos once. Got a room with a round bed. The room with the round bed AND the jacuzzi at the top of the oversized champagne glass was already taken!
Your a few hours North of us arent you?
Linoln County.
11. Your room reeks from the smell of bleach (which you believe is intended to mask an ever fouler oder).
we are all just prisoners here of our own device
Bed Bugs are a tough bug to get rid of and an increasing problem in hotels in the USA and Europe.
Bed Bugs have become resistant to many forms of modern pestisides. They are also difficult for pestisides to get to them. They hide inside the mattress and only come out at night. They hide during the day. They dont spread disease, but they WILL bite.
They spread mostly from suitcases. Yes.. when you put your suitcase on the bed, they will jump in and follow you and infect one hotel to another and even infect your house. And the hotel will have no clue they have a problem until guests complain.
Be warned...you can encounter bed bugs at a Motel 6 as well as a 5-star resort. This is a growing problem all across the country. Pest Control companies are reporting a very steady increase in bed bug infestations in all hotel chains.
A mother of a friend was in town the day of the murder of the shopkeeper, and subsequent arrest (and finding of his creepy souveniers in his home). She used to tell us stories that would make your skin crawl. Of course, she and the rest of the town remembered him as "Odd Ed" before they knew of the evil man he was.
The original author of the book, Robert Bloch, lived in a different town a few miles away from me, and the house that was "featured" in the film was based on a house in my town, that I believe is for sale right now. The house itself had no connection what-so-ever to do with the case, the author just liked the look of it.
