Pit Bull Mauls Man Going To Buy Drink

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Matt Geary was walking into a convenience store last Friday to buy a drink when he was mauled by a pit bull.

The father of three thought he was going to die after suffering deep bite wounds on his arms and legs and undergoing multiple surgeries over two days to repair the damage.

"He had chipped the bone with his teeth when he bit," Geary said of the dog. "The feeling on the top of my thumb is gone."

Geary said he was walking into a Jiffy Mart gas station on Post Street to buy a soda, and he saw the dog chained to a pole, with the owner a several feet away.

"I walked to give it wide berth, and as I was walking, I heard somebody say, 'No!'" Geary said.

The dog's chain broke, and the animal charged straight at him. According to a police report, the canine attacked Geary until the owner "beat the dog until the dog released the bite."

Police said the owner "grabbed the dog's leash and ran from the scene."

Geary said he has no idea why.

"That is the $64,000 question," he said. "It took a day and a half to find him, but (the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office) was able to."

Geary said he identified the owner and the dog with the help of a police officer. The owner told police he had no excuse for not returning to the scene, and he said the dog had bitten someone before, according to the report. Geary said he's upset the city's Animal Care and Protective Services still hasn't impounded the dog, even considering its violent history.

"If I had my children with me, it could have been catastrophic," Geary said. "It would've killed a kid. That's the biggest thing I want to happen: That dog has got to get off the street before it hurts somebody that isn't as fortunate as I am."

No charges have been filed against the dog's owner, and Geary said he'll be satisfied only if the dog is euthanized.

The dog's owner told Channel 4 he was turning the dog in Wednesday to be put down.

This should be in chat. Seriously, your cause is for another forum. People should start to complain about your postings on FR. Way too often, for a phobia of dogs.

You might consider pondering the meaning of “phobia,” and also whether Chet has posted reports or warnings about dogs that have not attacked or threatened to attack someone.

There's nothing wrong with posting these reports as they show the continuing danger that these dogs pose to people in cities. If you live in the country and have one, then at least someone else can shoot it if it gets out of hand.

The city is no place for these kinds of dogs and these news reports are what is actually happening with these dogs. I'm surprised they haven't been outlawed in more places. They probably will be as time goes on.

Oh... from our insurance agent -- forget about getting house insurance if you own this dog at your house ... LOL ... you're not going to get insurance (at least not anything affordable ... :-)

Its not the dogs fault.

Its the abusive owners fault. / sarc

Why are such a disproportionate amount of animal abusers drawn to pitbulls?

I don’t believe it is always an abusive owner’s fault. Considering the genetic history of the breed, you don’t know how far your cute little puppy is from fighting stock. I have limited trust in PB’s.

Keeping a dog on a chain, rather than keeping it in a fenced in yard, is a bad idea as it tends to increase aggressive behavior.

Keeping a pit bull on a chain raises stupidity to Darwin levels.

Pit Bull Mauls Man Going To Buy Drink

The man shouldn't have bothered him while the dog was going to buy a drink.

“Why are such a disproportionate amount of animal abusers drawn to pitbulls?”<<<<<<

They too believe the dogs are bad and desire them. The same thing happened to German Shepherds, Rotties, and Dobies, and the media was right there reporting away the whole time.

And why on Earth can you not see that a dog chained up to a pole by a man who is willing to run away is not at fault? It’s a freaking DOG, and the OWNER couldn’t be bothered to do the right thing?? How the heck is it NOT the owner’s fault?

“There’s nothing wrong with posting these reports as they show the continuing danger that these dogs pose to people in cities. If you live in the country and have one, then at least someone else can shoot it if it gets out of hand.”<<<<<

I really don’t think it’s a secret...news reporters love pit bull stories. I find it sad though, that most people still cannot accurately identify a pit bull, given all the attention they receive. Perhaps that is why the CDC says they are often misidentified and overreported.

By the way, if you live in the city or country and your dog is running loose, you’re an irresponsible dog owner, and THAT is what the experts all agree is the reason behind dog attacks of all breeds.

On a side note, there are a few insurance companies that will not discriminate on dog owners based on the breed of dog. I believe Farmer’s Insurance is one of these, but I have also heard that it depends on which agent you talk to. Some of them don’t even know their own policies, unfortunately.
