DETROIT (AP)Armando Galarraga(notes) squeezed the ball in his mitt, stepped on first base with his right foot and was ready to celebrate the first perfect game in Detroit Tigers history.
What happened next will be the talk of baseball for the rest of this season and likely a lot longer. Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera(notes) reacts to first base umpire Jim Joyce calling Cleveland Indians' Jason Donald(notes) safe in the ninth inning of a baseball game in Detroit, Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Tigers' Armando Galarraga(notes) lost his bid for a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning on the disputed call at first base. Detroit won 3-0.
Umpire Jim Joyce emphatically called Clevelands Jason Donald(notes) safe and a chorus of groans and boos echoed in Comerica Park.
Then Joyce emphatically said he was wrong.

To err is human. To really screw it up requires an umpire.

It was a horrible call by the ump. I mean just one of those calls that’ll go into baseball history.

Give the umpire some credit here. This is the first time that I have become aware of an umpire making a sincere aplogy in person for an obvious mistake. They usually deny any mistakes.
Another thought, why didn’t the home plate umpire reverse the call? He would have been doing everyone a favor and there should not have been any complaints.
To: Sam Clements
Given the situation, I am surprised the umps didn’t confer. It was a horrible call.

I umpired my way through high school. I am allowed to criticize my colleagues. Smile.

Ask Milt Pappas what he thinks of the home plate umpire who called ball 4 on the 27th batter.

Time for instant replay in baseball - the Flyers ended up winning their hockey game tonight after a reversed call following reviews of the tape gave them a goal which had been denied......

And a few hours later the Twins were robbed of the third out in the bottom of the 10th by an equally bad call, this time at second, ending a game that should have to to the 11th tied. Lousy night for umps.

Terrible call, it did not even look close in real time, much less in slow motion.

I heard somebody from Detroit say that Armando Galarraga now has the distinction of being the only player in the history of baseball to pitch a perfect game of 28 outs.

"I heard somebody from Detroit say that Armando Galarraga now has the distinction of being the only player in the history of baseball to pitch a perfect game of 28 outs."
Harvey Haddox had a perfect game going into the 13th inning and lost it in the 13th. So he pitched a perfect game of 36 outs...
