"....... The story goes on to say that Joran quickly gambled away all his money and, by the time he met Stefany at the Atlantic City Casino in Lima on May 30, he'd been spending his days in the seedy, $36 a night hotel room where Stefany's body was found, watching porn and lamenting his inability to pick up Peruvian women. That's when he saw Stefany come into the casino and win "a lot of money" in a 3:30 AM, Texas Hold 'Em tournament.
According to witnesses, Stefany was known around the casino to be a lesbian who flirts with men. She was a high roller who came in five nights a week, alone or with her father, and often won a lot of money. Joran spotted her and moved in....."
NEW YORK (CBS) - The FBI is defending its failure to arrest murder suspect Joran van der Sloot on extortion charges in the Natalee Holloway case, saying they were getting closer to making a murder arrest in that case, and didn't want to blow the investigation.
[....]
"According to the official, the FBI felt that for the first time in five years they were on the brink of finding Natalee Holloway's body. The FBI says it was receiving statements from van der Sloot about how and where he hid the body. Aruban officials, along with FBI agents, "were working this very intensely," including looking at blueprints, making plans to dig and bring in cadaver dogs.
"We were not trying to build a white collar extortion case. We were trying to solve the crime," the senior official told CBS News.
The official said there was no evidence van der Sloot, now 22, was a serial killer or about to commit another crime....."

AP sources: FBI paid money in van der Sloot sting
The FBI thought it was closing in on Joran Van der Sloot in the notorious Natalee Holloway missing-teenager case, paying him at least $15,000 in a sting operation, federal officials said Wednesday. But when the agency delayed his arrest to help build a murder case, he took the money and headed for Peru, where authorities say he now has confessed to killing a different young woman.
Dietl said that at a May 10 meeting in Aruba, Kelly offered van der Sloot $25,000 upfront, with the rest to be delivered once the body was found.
"He said he pushed Natalee Holloway, her head hit a rock," Dietl said. He said the father was told the body was buried "near a construction site near their house." But the information proved to be false, said the private investigator.
"He's lied so much, we don't know," said Dietl, who has been working with Kelly on the Holloway case.

For Immediate Release
June 9, 2010 FBI Birmingham
Contact: Public Affairs Specialist Paul E. Daymond
United States Attorney’s Office
Northern District of Alabama
Joint Statement by United States Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick Maley Regarding the Joran van der Sloot Investigation
In April of this year, the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s office in Birmingham, Alabama initiated an investigation into allegations of criminal conduct by Joran van der Sloot related to the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba five years earlier. Prior to law enforcement’s involvement in the situation, Van der Sloot offered to provide information to an individual regarding the location of Natalee Holloway’s remains and the circumstances of her death in exchange for $250,000.00. The FBI-led investigation was conducted in conjunction with Aruban authorities. The U.S. Attorney filed a criminal complaint charging van der Sloot with extortion and wire fraud on June 3, 2010.
Some news accounts have suggested that the FBI provided $25,000.00 in funds that were transmitted to van der Sloot. This is incorrect. The funds involved were private funds.
News accounts have also questioned why charges were not brought earlier, so that the tragic death of Stephany Flores could have been avoided. We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the Flores family. The Birmingham investigation was not related in any way to the murder in Peru. Despite having been in motion for several weeks at the time of Miss Flores’ death, it was not sufficiently developed to bring charges prior to the time van der Sloot left Aruba. This is not due to any fault on the part of the FBI or the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where agents and prosecutors were working as hard as possible to bring the case to fruition when they learned of the murder. A case based on events outside of the United States is a complex matter, and work was proceeding with all deliberate speed to prepare the evidence, the charges, and the necessary procedures to obtain custody of van der Sloot.
Statement by the Birmingham FBI, who emphatically state that they did NOT provide the 25 thousand dollars.
Here’s a statement released by the Birmingham FBI who state that the FBI did NOT provide the 25 thousand dollars used in the sting operation.
I thought it was $15,000.
They wired $15 grand to a bank account in the Netherlands, and they gave him ten thousand dollars cash in Aruba.
Lots of information and misinformation out there now.
Focusing on the money is immaterial and changes the subject as to who allowed him to walk away from the video taping of him counting the money he extorted.
Aruba saying they tipped off the FBI that Joran was about to leave the country.
Eventually we might get the whole story. In the meantime, another young woman is dead.
Ocean tides? where did you hear that?
That story sounds like Scott Peterson’s computer.
Updates, beginning at # 917.
Evidentally one item that was found on his lap top was all the times of the tidal ocean surges near Lima, Peru.
Thanks, hennie pennie.
What the Experts Hear in van der Sloot ConfessionUpdated: 4 hours 56 minutes ago
Thx HP.
Ignoring his lies - but understanding that within the lies are some truthies - there is always the possibility that she did open his laptop and found the names of other victims. That would have angered him - more than the Natalee references - which he has eagerly exploited.
One poster pointed out that it actually was probably NOT to find out when to dispose of the body, but rather that JVDS had been advised to return to Aruba ASAP, or to try to get to Argentina which MAYBE has extradition treaties with the NL, so that Juran could serve any time in a fancy hospital in Holland, and not in a Peruvian prison --- so he'd be checking the tides to figure out when would be most adventageous time to said to Argentina, then maybe onto Aruba -- OR maybe someone was going to pick him up in a boat???
I pinged you to the official statement of the Birmingham Alabama FBI that it was not their funds, that the 25 grand came from private sources.
Very intriguing. What about his rumored ties to drug runners and human trafficking? And the *friend* who supposedly took Natalee’s body out to sea?
He either has more imagination than we do - or he is involved in a global crime cartel.
Would love to see his passport(s) logs.
