Australia has filed a complaint against Japan at the world court in The Hague to stop Southern Ocean scientific whaling, the International Court of Justice said on Tuesday.
In the filing, Australia said Japan was violating the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW) by killing whales for research purposes.
Commercial whaling was banned under a 1986 moratorium, but Japan still culls whales for what it says is research.Whaling has been a thorny issue between the two trading partners, though both in the past have vowed not to let it affect their relations, which include growing military and security cooperation.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, whose popularity is slipping ahead of elections later this year, in February set Japan a November deadline to halt whaling, which his Labour government has now pre-empted
Must be culinary research, because the Japanese still eat the things.
Did they agree to it?
If they did, they should either honor it or formally withdraw from it.
Their legal pretext doesn't impress anyone. They should just drop it.
I wonder if the Aussies would feel better if the whales were called “aquatic kangaroos”?

Exactly, I loved the South Park spoof of the Whale Wars propaganda show on Animal Planet, ha ha ha. (Japanese: “We no longer hate dolphin and whale, now we hate cow and chicken”).
I’m very glad Animal Planet is airing the 3rd season of the Whale Wars program starting this Friday night I think. One of the most unintentionally funniest shows ever, ha ha ha.
For those who don’t watch, the enviros have this whole propaganda show set up to show how noble they are, but despite vociferous boasting about how awesome they are, the enviros constantly fail in ever achieving anything beyond just cruising around, bitching at each other, and ultimately failing in their mission.
I would presume that the Australian government’s response above is because of public pressure that Whale Wars placed on lib/com/symp bureaucrats, but really, when you watch the incompetent enviros the whole movement is shown to be a farce, ha ha ha.

Why is it “racist” to bring up Japanese war crimes during World War II (”You can’t criticize another culture!”) but it’s okay to sit in judgment on their whaling???
Whale sushi is delicious. But then again, so is raw horse sushi.
I usuually side with Australia, but not this time. Japan is conducting legal by IWC rules, hunts of non-endangered whales.
You know, no one has been able to explain to me why I am supposed to give a crap about whales in the first place. Do you want deer hunting banned also? If not, you are a hypocrit.
Yes, I watched the program too. I found the “captain” most amusing as he talks about dying to save the whales but it’s the idiots that try to carry out his incompetent directions that risk life and limb.
Meanwhile he has this constipated look on his face for the cameras. Watson’s a cynical old hack who’s found a means of feeding his ego.
