Life has taught me that outside of academia no one ever actually wins a debate.

How wrong you are.

I do my homework beforehand, I reference facts accurately, I set aside ego and emotion and I make my points clearly and defended them.

Conversely, no one I debated had done any research beforehand, no one had any facts to support any position, no one made any points, clear, vague or otherwise and they all got emotional once they realized they had lost the debate.

Winning a debate does not mean you "brought the person you were debating with over to your side". That seldom happens if ever yet debates are won and lost all the time. I know this to be true because I do it regularly.

Lol, you’re missing the point. Most debates between individuals are merely monologues in the presence of a witness. You don’t win a damned thing if the other fellow walks away believing you’re wrong, no matter how right you think you may be. The idea that you’ve somehow “won” is nothing more than narcissism on your part.
