Anastasia Megan, 13, with her horse, Duke, in the family's Center Hill stable, has been home-schooled and has finished her high-school curriculum.
Too many adults on campus meaning no adult supervision for the kid.
Odd! I remember in college we had a little fellow in the computer lab who couldn’t have been more than 14. He went by the user name Poindexter.
He's right. Because in high school they only teach things like masturbation, fisting, gay sex and 'the choice' of abortion. < /sarc>
No one in their right mind would want to send a 13 year old girl to college. Possibly on-line courses, but not the whole normal college experience. I had a 16 year old room mate at College and she was the wildest girl on campus. Her parents had kept their thumb on her at home and she was religious- just went crazy at college.
Having said that, I agree with the college. While this girl is quite probably smart enough for college, I highly doubt she is mature enough. Speaking from an educator’s standpoint, I would have to censor my classes to accomadate her age and sensibilities. As a classmate, I’d be uncomfortable discussing things college students discuss with her around.
I’m sure this is not a popular opinion, but her maturity level should be considered.
What about letting a 13yr old be a 13yr old? I’ve known a couple of super achievers and both had some emotional problems later on when everything caught up with them. In one case, she couldn’t deal with not being exceptional during her adult years. She was still smart and successful, but nobody cares about that kind of thing when you are 22. Her entire life, she was told how special she was because she was so smart for her age. Well...the novelty eventually wears off.
I think that denying children admission who are perfectly capable of performing in that environment is flat out wrong. The denial of access to public accomodations aspect of this is something that I find especially troubling.
If a 13 year old has taxable income, then I assume that the state would have no moral problem in taxing it. Yet that same 13 year old, if they had both the aptitude and desire, would not be allowed to attend community college? A community college that they were subsidizing through their taxes?
I started 12th grade at 15 years old and college at 16. Hearing “adult” things from classmates didn’t stigmatize me!
She should do online college. We have many homeschoolers here at the Junior College who are this age. It’s California, tho, and not Florida.
As a homeschooling mom, I too agree with the school. She should only be allowed to take individual classes, with her parent waiting outside the door of the classroom after each, or even sitting in the back.
There is just about nothing you can’t learn from books or online. She doesn’t need, at early puberty, to be alone all day on a campus with wild college kids. As a college, I’d not want that responsibility.
My kids take college courses at around age 14 or 15, ONE course at a time and I meet them outside the class.
Little pubescent girls (and boys) need protecting.
No need to grandstand on this. There is CLEP, which could cover two years of college, and if the kid is so smart, she could take on line courses and self study towards being a third year student at age 16, I am certain.
I wouldn’t and didn’t expose my young ones to the horrid atmosphere at the local community college until they were 15, and that was still pretty young.
I see no problem at all with her going to classes with older students.
Living in a dorm and doing the whole college thing ... another story, of course.
I have taught medical students for 30 years.
As you might imagine, I’ve seen hundreds of fast-trackers.
It’s almost always a mistake. I can count on the fingers of one hand the exceptions.
They do exist, but it’s very, very rare.
