Denied college because of age -- she's 13 [home-schooled]

ORLANDO, Fla.- Parents of a home-schooled 13-year-old Florida girl say they are filing a complaint because she's being denied entry to college because of her age.

The retired engineer parents of Anastasia "Annie" Megan say they have gone as far as they can go in educating their daughter. She's almost completed her high school education and they've applied for Annie to take dual-enrollment classes at Lake-Sumter Community College in Leesburg, Florida, but they've been turned down by college officials, who say she's not ready to be in classes with older students, the Orlando Sentinel reported Sunday.

The parents have filed an age-discrimination complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights against the college.

"If she meets all the qualifications but for her age, then why not let her in?" asked her mother, Louise Racine. "What's the worst that can happen, honestly? If a child does pass these tests, don't you think they should be allowed to continue their education to the next level and continue to let their minds grow?"

Although college President Charles Mojock would not comment specifically, the Sentinel said, he talked about the freedom of the college environment.

"Anyone basically can walk onto our campus," Mojock said. "So we've got a very different environment (than a high school). … And we have many adult students having adult conversations on adult topics and that may or may not be suitable for some young students."

"It's a shame to see the (college) administration taking the go-slow approach to a bright student who wants to continue to learn," Annie's father John Megan said.

You were saying ...

That’s the kind of person I’d want my 13 or 14 year old to NOT meet in community college.

Well..., I wouldn't be sending that 14-year old girl there in the first place, knowing the kind of culture and mentality that one will run into there -- not until they grow up a bit more ... :-)

Is that some kind of rule you just made up, on the spot? LOL ...

I see no problem at all with her going to classes with older students.

Living in a dorm and doing the whole college thing ... another story, of course.

If you’ve been a successful home schooler, you’ve already won.

But I tend to agree with the posters who believe this young lady should not ‘go off’ to college.

Taking some classes and commuting would be fine.

There’s nothing in this article that indicated that this girl would be *going off* to college.

That’s simply a strawman some constructed and used to attack homeschoolers.

From what I recall, most colleges have age restrictions for living in dorms anyway so even if the parents wanted to, they likely couldn’t send her off to college.

Homeschoolers are not the ignorant of the world types that some here are trying to portray. No way any homeschool parent would send their child to live in a dorm at college.

Well, if it’s your own private rule, then you won’t mind if I ignore it then ... LOL ...

Save your “LOL”, clown. Some of us have home schooled beaucoup kids over a couple of decades. We all did it for our own reasons, none of which am I obligated to explain to you. You seem obsessed with pubescent girls having sex with older boys.....period.

Tells me volumes about you. Guess you didn’t get enough when you were younger. Sucks to be you. Now don’t bother replying to me again.

And you also might make note that other posters are not opposed to that either, as I noted in Post #125 ...

Well, there's no question about it ... if one were to maintain that kind of "control" over (let's say) the young 13-14 year old girl... in which they were dropped off for a specific class, someone waiting for them in the library during that time, and picking them up right after class, and driving them home -- yep, they would be supervised quite adequately.

The issue here, as I see it -- is that no matter whether homeschooled or not, no 13-14-year old girl should be in any situation like that, in that kind of environment, unsupervised -- without someone directly and immediately before class dropping her off, and immediately after class picking her up -- for each and every activity and/or class -- no matter what. The supervision, in that environment should be direct, immediate and pervasive.

And from that post, I was saying that the mother who did that with her own kids was doing the right thing.

No matter whether a 13-14 year old girl is supposedly more socially capable or not -- that's not the environment for her to be in, unsupervised -- without having someone directly looking over her for every class and every activity.

And so, once again -- it has absolutely nothing to do with homeschooling, actually -- it has to do with not having a 13-14-year old girl in that kind of environment without that kind of direct supervision.

You'll also note what I said about homeschooling in that same Post #125 ... :-) ...

I don't have a problem with homeschooling. I think it's preferable for parents to give their kids a proper "worldview" that derives from what the Bible teaches in the Word of God. And that can be done in homeschooling, while that's impossible in public schools.

You might have missed the fact that the article was about putting a 13-14 year old girl into an environment that is not the kind of environment that I would put her into without direct supervision by someone who knows her...

Now, if the subject was about 18-24 year old college students, on the other hand, then you wouldn’t find any comments by me about 13-14 year old girls ... LOL ...

That's because you must think that they're exposing her to people like you.

If that was the case, I wouldn't want her in your presence either.

I hope you weren't "homeschooled" because something "failed" in the process of that education ... LOL ...

Using your "reasoning" -- someone who didn't want their 13-14 year old to go into a "gay hangout" would be because they were gay. And the reason why another person wouldn't want their 13-14 year old to mix in with those who are drug users, is because they're a drug addict.

And the reson why others don't want young kids like that to go into bars, is because they are drunks ... LOL ...

Please, don't say you were homeschooled ... okay? ... :-)

I'll tell you what ... you don't post to me and I won't post to you ... that's usually the way it works around here ... and I follow that convention, too ...

You'll note that you started posting to me in Post #192, which must have offended someone else who read your post, because someone had the post removed ... LOL ... [and it wasn't me ...]

And you'll note I didn't post to you, initially -- but only responded to anything you posted directly to me ... :-)

You also might make note of this ...

We've received many requests from freepers requesting that other freepers not post to them. There are several problems with this.

1. It's impossible for us to enforce.
2. We don't have the time to enforce these requests.
3. We don't have the software to keep track of these requests.
4. Thick skin helps.
5. Ignore the poster, if you don't reply, they won't reply.

Free Republic does not need a bozo filter, bozo filters are for wimps.

And, again, I follow that rule and don't post to those who are not repeatedly posting to me ... :-)

Save your smug attitude. It’s rather well known here that my language may go south when I’m ticked. I don’t care about individual posts being deleted. I’ve been on this site for over a dozen years.

I see that you claim to be a Christian, yet everything in your posts says otherwise. You remind me of those bastards that protest at the funerals of veterans, while claiming to be Baptists.

You have......issues. You’ve hereby lost all credibility with true Christians on this site.

As for replying to me, I don’t give a damn what you post about supposed limitations or rules. Don’t post to me, boy.

"I have to agree with the college on this. 13 is to young for that setting."

Hogwash. There's a difference between attending classes at a local campus and packing her off to live in a different state.

Save your smug attitude.

I didn't know you were monitoring attitudes. I might have watched things a bit more closely once I saw you on this thread ... otherwise ... LOL ...

I see that you claim to be a Christian, yet everything in your posts says otherwise.

Oh... so you think common sense and Christianity don't go together... eh?

You remind me of those bastards that protest at the funerals of veterans, while claiming to be Baptists.

LOL ... so you think that the website of Westboro Baptist Church, where Fred Phelps takes his group and protests military funerals saying that they deserved their deaths, because of homosexuality -- is similar to -- someone posting that it's a bad decision to send a 13-14 year old girl, unsupervised by someone she knows, into the anything-goes environment of college of 18-24 year old women and men?

If so... I can see why you probably have some posts of yours deleted ... a bit of lack of control and an inability to distinguish the difference between different subject matter ... :-)

Sorry.., I can't help you out there ...

You have......issues. You’ve hereby lost all credibility with true Christians on this site.

I see you're a mind-reader, too ... :-)

As for replying to me, I don’t give a damn what you post about supposed limitations or rules. Don’t post to me, boy.

I find it interesting that for someone who doesn't want to have a conversation with another poster -- you sure keep up your end of the conversation ... LOL ...
