ORLANDO, Fla.- Parents of a home-schooled 13-year-old Florida girl say they are filing a complaint because she's being denied entry to college because of her age.
The retired engineer parents of Anastasia "Annie" Megan say they have gone as far as they can go in educating their daughter. She's almost completed her high school education and they've applied for Annie to take dual-enrollment classes at Lake-Sumter Community College in Leesburg, Florida, but they've been turned down by college officials, who say she's not ready to be in classes with older students, the Orlando Sentinel reported Sunday.
The parents have filed an age-discrimination complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights against the college.
"If she meets all the qualifications but for her age, then why not let her in?" asked her mother, Louise Racine. "What's the worst that can happen, honestly? If a child does pass these tests, don't you think they should be allowed to continue their education to the next level and continue to let their minds grow?"
Although college President Charles Mojock would not comment specifically, the Sentinel said, he talked about the freedom of the college environment.
"Anyone basically can walk onto our campus," Mojock said. "So we've got a very different environment (than a high school). And we have many adult students having adult conversations on adult topics and that may or may not be suitable for some young students."
"It's a shame to see the (college) administration taking the go-slow approach to a bright student who wants to continue to learn," Annie's father John Megan said.
One other thing you might want to think about: If an 18, 19, or 20 year old lays a finger on this girl, they are looking a FELONY and registration as a sex offender for life. I realize that some of those guys may not think about those consequences, but most will.
Whereas in high school - the girl is pretty much fair game to anyone within a couple of years of her age.
No. Its more like she has a few hours of classes - mom drops her off just before the first one and picks her up just after the last one. Not much time for drugs, booze, and sex...unlike when high school lets out for the day.
LOL ... haven't been to college, eh? ... :-)
I don't know about others, but the "formula" that I remember from college days is that for every "one credit hour" of a course, you could figure three to four hours of study time. And a lot of that study time will be in the libary, or in some kind of study group with one or two others, and you'll either stay after your classes are done and spend time at the university library, or you'll squeeze some in between gaps in classes, some days maybe having three or four hours or more inbetween classes.
Sometimes you can have an 8 AM class, a gap of two hours, an 11 AM classe another gap of three hours and then a 3 or 4 PM class and then maybe you'll spend some time at the library until it closes at perhaps 11 PM. And in between all that, you'll grab some lunch and then a dinner and then some "kick-back time" -- and never leave the campus.
Oh, and don't forget "lab time" too.... and then time for taking care of some miscellaneous administrative details with the university, having to meet with advisors and professors from time to time ...
That would not be unusual.
AND ... that leaves a "whole lot of opportunity" for a "whole lot of other things" to happen, too ... :-)
“I have no idea when your sister went to college”
Her undergrad school was St. John’s in Annapolis, then Harvard for a summer school organic chem, then John’s Hopkins for med school.
As for “protecting” a student from Liberalism, sexual acts either normal or perverse, forget it.
With data as readily available as it is, wise parents and educators must rely on student acceptance of what hte Founders called “Natural Law”
Fortunately, such law is self evident and many students can easily grasp it.
After all, the American Republic is predicated upon an informed electorate which is responsible for its acts.
The sex freaks, both students and “educrats” are not the norm, and many students do realize this.
That's a legal determination, not a societal one. Fourteen year olds make that decision every day so it's not that they are technically unable to or incapable of making that decision.
Oh yeah! There is ample time to do a whole lot of things in between classes, day time or not -- commuter college or a college town where everyone is on campus.
If the kid is that determined to live like that, she's going to regardless of whether she's taking community college courses or not. If you think that that sort of thing doesn't go on in public schools or after school hours either, you are way more delusional than you appear to be by your posts.
No one in their right mind would want to send a 13 year old girl to college. Possibly on-line courses, but not the whole normal college experience. I had a 16 year old room mate at College and she was the wildest girl on campus. Her parents had kept their thumb on her at home and she was religious- just went crazy at college.
One other thing you might want to think about: If an 18, 19, or 20 year old lays a finger on this girl, they are looking a FELONY and registration as a sex offender for life. I realize that some of those guys may not think about those consequences, but most will.
I think you've got a bit of a "conflict" here with some of the "thinking" I see on this thread, though.
First of all, I see some maintaining that it's something that is entirely within the parent's choice and decision to have a young girl like that mixed in with the older boys. I mentioned that this is similar to parents deciding that it's okay for their 14-year old daughter to have sex in their home, with their boyfriends (having decided that it's preferable to be in their home than out somewhere else where they can get into more trouble). And I said that it's something that should be totally in the control of the parents themselves and not the state, so I would agree with it being totally under the parent's control and not the state.
And then, secondly, there's the "thinking" that a 14-year old girl that has been homeschooled is developmentally the equal (and maybe "better") than those who have been educated in public schools and thus they can match up with those of 18, 19, or 20 or more years old.
And if one has that particular "viewpoint" that this 14-year old is developmentally as advanced as one of 18-24 years old, then her decisions should be as respected as one that is 20 years old. If that 14-year old decides to have sex with a 20-year old boyfriend, and since she's as developmentally advanced as he is -- it should be perfectly okay -- being her decision.
There's the problem you're going to run into -- here -- with the "thinking" that this 13-14 year old girl is much more "advanced" socially and developmentally han her calendar age.
IN ADDITION, I've already seen posted here, that this 13-14 year old girl can act and behave as advanced as an 18-19 year old (or more) and "look like it" -- so that she can actually "pass" for being that old anyway. And if that's the case (she can look at old as 18-19 years old, yet being only 14 years old, can act that old, is developmentally advanced and capable of her own decisions) -- then it should be no problem for her and some 20-year old boyfriend.
” AND... in that regard, I think I’ve read plenty about how girls of less than 18 “cannot” (i.e, “are not able” developmentally) to make those decisions...
So, you say that a 13-14-year old can make the decision, but I believe you’ll find a “whole lot of material” to say that it’s “impossible” for them to make such a ecision”
History, and non-liberal, non-’soft science’ literature sez otherwise. Remember that females of 13/14 were not only choosing mates, occasionally one sat on a throne. And, I mean ruled, not just passed time while a regent made all the decisions.
Females do mature rather earlier than males. That is probably why Old testament era males married at 30 and females married in their teens. Arguably, Moses knew more about humans than Libtard educators.
Hoo-boy! The kinds of things that one can come up with when one "irrationally" supports an idea to the "extreme" ... :-)
Putting a smiley face at the end of a post deliberately designed to insult and malign an entire group of people isn't going to convince them you aren't serious about it.
There you have it folks, what some people think of homeschoolers, that we think it's legitimate for 14 year olds to have sex with college age kids just because we homeschool and think that homeschool students should be allowed to attend a community college.
It's the natural outcome of our *extreme*, homeschooling mentality, dontcha know?
ST, why is your mind so in the gutter? Your posts on this thread do nothing other than demonstrate a very warped, twisted view of college students, their behavior as a whole, homeschoolers, and your past, as revealed in your own posts about YOUR college life.
” You’re equating sending a 13 year old homeschool student to a community college to ake vollege courses to inviting her boyfriend over for a sleepover because they’re already likely having sex?
The parents aren’t the idiots here.
You are.”
The above must have been intended for someone else, as I never posted the above, not anything like it.
You don’t have a clue about how commuters take college classes, do you?
NO commuter wants to schedule classes with that kind of free time and I don’t believe for a minute that this this girl’s parents would permit it.
Just because you think a certain way, doesn’t mean that everyone else does.
If nothing else, your arguments in this case have given a very revealing insight into your mind and what you’re really like.
My three homeschoolers started college at the ages of 13, 12, and 13, so I have some experience with this.
First of all, kids that age can't drive. They need to be chauffeured to and from all their classes. I waited in the library. They took their one or two classes. We got in the car, and we came home. Simple.
As the kids grew older, and took more classes, I waited for them in the library, and, as siblings, they waited for each other and studied either in the library or the math lab. They actually came to be very good friends with the tutors in the math lab and all were ( at various times) offered jobs as tutors. Two started tutoring at the ages of 14.
So...Many kids start at university at the age of 17. Mine started at 16. Oh wow! Big difference ( /s) especially since they were still living at home!
In the meantime they still did teenage things. They were active in their dance classes, had sleep overs with their teen girl friends, were very active in their church youth group...etc.
Homeschoolers all over America are starting college at very young ages. It is now a **normal** occurrence. At one time in our nation's history, when most youth were homeschooled, home tutored, or attended tutoring academies, it was **common** for youth to start college as young teens.
Perhaps government schooling is actually pathologically harming our young people by artificially retarding their academic and social development. Homeschoolers are NORMAL! It is the institutionalized child who is being deliberately and maliciously retarded ( for political reasons) in their development.
Homeschoolers sending their young teenaged kids to local community colleges are NOT sending them to live there. It’s for a couple courses a semester as a commuter with the parent providing the transportation.
Her parents had kept their thumb on her at home and she was religious- just went crazy at college.
It's been reported that boys in college find that girls who have been raised "religiously" at home are the ones who will "go wild" in college, once they get somewhat removed from some of those restrictions that they were under, while at home in a closely-watched situation. In a university setting, even with a commuter college, you are not as closely watched as you would be at home and in high school.
Whether in the context of a "commuter college" or living on campus -- it would be approximately the same thing, because of many of the other students maintaining living quarters either on campus anyway (even with that commuter college) and having a lot of surrounding apartments right around the commuter college for university students, and one associating with those students who would be living right there, too.
There are lots of things that one does at the university, like lab course, gaps between classes and study time in the libary and study groups with other students, while still on campus).
The first person in the reply list was Star Traveler, and I’m about 99% sure that response was to that FReeper. Everyone else, including you, was a cc:, so yes, that was addressed to someone else, but metmom thought you should see it.
This is an important thing to understand when using Free Republic. Many FReepers use this convention, including me. I wish that there were a way to make cc:s explicit, but there isn’t.
You were simple courtesy pinged.
It was NOT directed to you.
They should definitely let her take a couple of classes and see how it goes.
It’s not like she’d be living in a dorm.
Drop her off for class, pick her up promptly afterward...what’s the problem?
Absolutely correct. What I often do is ping the person who was being responded to since the comment I"m responding to was made to them. Clear as mud, eh?

I couldn't agree more. It's not uncommon at all for someone to not understand it. Happens to me all the time with courtesy pings.
It would be nice if there were a FReeper etiquette page that could explain the finer details of posting courtesy that you just have to learn the hard way otherwise.
According to many, she'll be sneaking off to get knocked up and do drugs between classes.....

Obviously, but tough for some of us to accept.
