Please refer back to the first comment I made, which mentioned specifically how my comments were not meant to knock the thread, and which appreciated tioga’s work. I know that there are people whose rhetorical style it is to say, “I don’t mean to call say you smell bad, but pee-yoo!” I am not such. I mean what I write. I’m just adding to that my dislike for pretense. It seemed relevant to some, since a stated purpose of the thread is to ease effective communication.
Eloquence does not mean simple-minded language. The best word may be a relatively unfamiliar one. The Douay-Rheims bible, for instance, retains many “Latinisms,” so that the reader may learn the precise theological concept through learning the word.
Further, I recognize that sometimes, it’s fun to use a newly learnt word.
I was only expressing why you’d never catch me using Brobdingnagian.
but it is helpful to know what it means, should you encounter it somewhere. no offense taken, we are merely explaining why we feature words of all sorts, not just to further effective communication, but because we like to MESS WITH THEM! ; )
