2010 was a pretty good sequel to 2001, one of my all time fav movies. I'm not so sure the message was from HAL as my understanding it was from the same source that created the monoliths found on the moon.
Yes, "Dave Bowman" overrode HAL's orders and "told" it to transmit the message for as long as HAL was able. It was one of my favorites also. 2001, well, I thought the first half of that film was a study in boredom.
