Starry, starry night. Paint your palette blue and grey, Look out on a summer's day, With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.

One of the finest lyrics in modern music.

Thank you for this musical treat. This has always been one of my two favorite songs and has special meaning to me from long ago. This was really a great post.
From another “navy seal dad”.

Thank you for the post!

The first concert I attended was Don McClean almost 40 years ago.

He has a voice that still gives me goosebumps.

Thank you.. just lovely. It took me back to high school when we had to analyze American Pie for an English class. Everyone tore apart the lyrics searching for the hidden meanings. Years later I saw McLean interviewed. When asked to explain why he wrote the lyrics he replied, “they rhymed.”

Those who don’t know enough
Say it, “Vincent Van Guff”;
Those more in the know
Say it, “Vincent Van Go”;
But they’re both quite off
for it’s “Vincent Van Goff.”

I also saw him in concert, during the same year, more than likely. As Bob Hope would say, thanks for the memories.

Agree that song has wonderful lyrics and melody. Too bad it is not on the radio much. It always gives me chills.

“Years later I saw McLean interviewed. When asked to explain why he wrote the lyrics he replied, “they rhymed.”

That reminds me of Robert Lamm being asked about the “hidden meaning” behind Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4”. He said “that’s what time it was”.

"Years later I saw McLean interviewed. When asked to explain why he wrote the lyrics he replied, “they rhymed.”"

While he might not have been able to say it back then, American Pie had clear references to a marxist takeover of the US and the corresponding destruction of religion. The word marxist was even mentioned at least once.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

An ending that has always touched me so -- unfortunately, this applies to so many these past several years on to today, especially the last line.

Chet Atkins also did this song justice.
