The wife and I have many trails in the Smokies. The tourists you see some times are the most stupid people alive. I seen a group of people heading downhill off the trail after a mother bear and two cubs. the mother bear sent the cubs up a tree and charged up the hill. The wife and I got the hell out of Dodge.

I probably would not take a .44 magnum like that myself....

where bears are present, I carry a .45 Colt old model Ruger vaquero(hence my name), loaded with my own magnum BEAR LOADS. these are not the most powerful side arms to carry but it will put one down if you dont wound it and piss it off....shot placement is critical.

Better yet...carry a short barreled 12ga pump or semi auto shotgun loaded with sabot slugs...and dont stop firing until your magazine is empty....lots of energy....second choice would be a Marlin Lever Action ‘Guide Gun’ in .450 Marlin or .45-70(loaded to .450 power levels...) at close ranges it is quite a sledgehammer....

I did research on the wildlife in the Smokies from 1977-1980 studying the bears and deer on a UT Wildlife project. I saw stupid things people do around bears almost on a daily basis. Just because the bears are in the woods and don’t run when people are present does not mean they aren’t wild.

For some reason, my eyes at first reading interpolated a comma after the third word of the headline. Put a different spin on it for a moment.
