Pizza in Naples 'baked using coffin wood'

Italian prosecutors believe pizza in the southern city of Naples may be baked in ovens lit with wood from coffins dug up in the local cemetery.

"Pizza, one of the few symbols of Naples that endures ... is hit by the concrete suspicion that it could be baked with wood from coffins," Italian daily newspaper Il Giornale reported.

Investigators in Naples are setting their sights on the thousands of small, lower-end pizza shops and bakeries that dot the city on suspicion that the owners may "use wood from caskets to keep ovens burning."

Naples' graveyard has long been hunting ground for thieves: last year, 5,000 flower pots were stolen from the cemetery.

"A gang might have set up a market for coffins sold to hard-hearted owners of bakeries and pizzerias looking to save money on wood," Il Giornale said.

According to tradition, Neapolitan pizza should be cooked in a stone oven with an oak-wood fire.

I can’t possibly see how this would save money. Isn’t diggin up graves labor intensive.

Reminds me of the Married With Children episode where Al Bundy cooked burgers using his annoying neighbor’s just-died relative’s ashes..

LOL, I remember that. I was going to make a comment about “Margherita Pizza,” but thought that it was in bad taste...

Guess they’re really short of wood over in Old Europe.

But I understand the pizza is so good it’s to die for.

Sorry, couldn’t help it.

Europe has turned into a third world country thanks to their general departure from God and their thereby descent into socialism hell.

Well, how DO you expect to get that “aged” flavor???

Pretty ghastly. But oak is pretty expensive even here, and we have vast forests. It’s a very slow-growing tree.

The best pizza I’ve ever had was out of one of those oak-burning ovens in Naples, and I grew up in a family-owned pizza place my whole life. In fact, I once had eight — count ‘em — EIGHT slices in one sitting while there.

Pizza to die for?

Naples was always a pretty rough liberty port. In the 70’s, even the USO was off-limits. You could always find hookers at night by looking for the burning tires they used to keep warm (”camp fire girls”).

Satanism is big in parts of Europe. This is a ritual - as close as they can safely get to human sacrifice or making human sacrifices to their god. The world is a sick freak right now.

I am reminded of Mark Twain, who in his 1869 book The Innocents Abroad wrote, "The fuel [Egyptian railroaders] use for the locomotive is composed of mummies three thousand years old, purchased by the ton or by the graveyard for that purpose ...". Twain was of course jesting.

Yeah there is only one reason why they’d do that and it got to be some macabre reason;nothing to do with saving money.
