WASHINGTON,- The U.S. Social Security Administration said Jacob was the top baby boy name for the 11th year in a row in 2009 while Isabella took the top position for girls.

The administration said Ethan took the second spot among boys, followed by Michael, Alexander, William, Joshua, Daniel, Jayden, Noah and Anthony. Jayden and Noah were new to the list this year, officials said.

Emma, last year's top name for girls, was No. 2 on this year's list, followed by Olivia, Sophia, Ava, Emily, Madison, Abigail, Chloe and Mia. The officials said Mia was new to this year's Top 10.

The administration released a statement from "Baby Jacob" and "Baby Isabella" thanking U.S. residents for their "support and good taste."

Jacob (pronounced /ˈdʒeɪkəb/; Hebrew: יַעֲקֹב‎, Standard Yaʿakov; Septuagint Greek: Ἰακώβ; "heel" or "leg-puller", Arabic: يعقوب Yaʿqūb), also known as Israel (Hebrew: יִשְׂרָאֵל‎, Standard Yisraʾel, Isrāʾīl; Septuagint Greek: Ἰσραήλ; "persevere with God"[1]), as described in the bible, was the third patriarch of the Jewish people, and ancestor of the twelve tribes of Israel, named after ten of his twelve sons, as well as the two sons of his son Joseph.

In the Hebrew Bible he is the son of Isaac and Rebecca, the grandson of Abraham and Sarah and of Bethuel, and the twin brother of Esau. He had twelve sons and several daughters, by his two wives, Leah and Rachel, and their maidservants, Bilhah and Zilpah. The children were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, daughter Dinah, Joseph, and Benjamin. Jacob had other daughters, whose names are not mentioned.[2][3] Before the birth of Benjamin, Jacob is renamed "Israel" by an angel, the name after which the modern nation of Israel is named.

Jacob was a mysterious figure of authority and is the spiritual guru of the Island who, according to Ben, was "in charge" of the Island. The Man in Black mockingly stated Jacob "protected" the Island from "nothing". Ageless and perhaps possessing supernatural abilities, Jacob lived on the Island since at least the 19th century, and recently resided inside the statue of Taweret until his death in 2007. Capable of coming from and going to the Island, Jacob appears to have had some subtle ability to foresee the future and guide events, purposefully encountering several individuals who later would become survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. In 2007, Jacob was viciously stabbed by Ben, who had been manipulated into doing so by the Man in Black. Before being kicked into his own fire pit, Jacob's last words were, "They're coming." After his death, Jacob appeared to Hurley, giving instructions.

Isabella I (Spanish: Isabel I, Ysabel, Galician: Sabela I; 22 April 1451 – 26 November 1504) was Queen of Castile and León. She and her husband Ferdinand II of Aragon brought stability to both kingdoms that became the basis for the unification of Spain. Later the two laid the foundation for the political unification of Spain under their grandson, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.

The original Castilian version of her name was Ysabel (Isabel in modern spelling), which is etymologically the same as Elizabeth, but in Germanic countries she is nevertheless usually known by an Italian form of her name, Isabella. The official inscription on her tomb renders her names in Latin as "Helizabeth". Pope Alexander VI named Isabella and her husband the Catholic Monarchs for which reason she is often known as Isabel la Católica ("Isabella the Catholic" or "Elizabeth the Catholic") in Castilian.

I’m glad you posted this! I’ve been working on baby girl names this afternoon. I love Isabella but don’t really want to use the #1 ranked name. I lke it because we can later pick a nickname that suits her personality—Izzy, Bella, Belle, Elle, Ellie, Ella. My husband likes Ainsley (got it from Ainsley Earnhardt—FNC). Others we are considering:

Lillian (Lily)
Estella/Estelle
Eva/Ava
Audrey
Aubrey
Clara/Claire
Isabella/Isabelle
Evelynn (Evie)
Reagan
Gwenyth

I always thought picking a girls name would be easier than naming my two boys was but it is a lot HARDER! Any suggestions? I want a name that can grow with her. That will be cute when she is young but also look good on a resume.

I love Katherine or Catherine so they can be called Kate. It just sounds so cool to me. I also like Francine or Marlene or Maureen. I guess I like the “leen” sound. Of course my daughter is Abby...my wife did not go for the “leen” lol.

I like Lily and Aubrey and Evelynn best. I thing Gwenyth would bring Paltrow to mind. Reagan sounds like the prez, or a boy’s name. JMHO only, for what it’s worth. :-)

Of Teutonic origin, “Aubrey” means “Fair Ruler of the Little People”, or “King of the Elves” [1]. The name Alberich is a more common Germanic variant, with the syllable ‘Alb’ translating as “Elf” and ‘Ric’ representing “power”. In the twelfth century, a Christian saint and abbot named St. Aubrey founded the Cistercian Order, seeking to operate under the Rule of St. Benedict, continuing Benedict of Nursia’s tradition of solitary scholarship in a community of monasticism.

The name is traditionally male, but is also used as a feminine name in the United States. It was the 69th most popular name given to girls born in the United States in 2007. It was last ranked among the top 1,000 most common names for boys in the United States in 2002.
