This is stupid. The college gets paid whether or not the students attend class and if students choose not to attend a class, that is their own problem.

to allow distance education services where students could attend classes from home
If they gave me the choice between class and dorm to attend class I would have never left the dorm.
I’m not saying I would have got any more work done, but I wouldn’t have felt as guilty about the extra rack time.

The new system will use sensors to detect students university identification cards when they enter classrooms...Why not just chip'em with implantable RFID?

There was one class I went to in college where I busted the grading curve every test, highest grade in the class sometimes by nearly ten points, and I only went to class for tests (because the guy instructing it was a lot more confusing than the textbook)...Attendance does not necessarily equal high grades and learning....

I know. All that expense and effort for technology that’s useless in that capacity.

So, the savvy kid will walk past the classroom or lecture hall door, wave the card through the opening and keep walking as he is recorded “present”.

This is a more efficient way of taking roll, but certainly not a more effective one.
My freshman work study job was a single project: Determine the number of students in each classroom at each hour of each day.
It took me 7 months to completely map out facilities utilization. A good portion of the rooms were utilized less than half the time. Only a handful were ever more than half full at any given time. I gave the liberal arts classrooms a double sampling, just to be sure. (see also: live nude subjects)

Why not just chip'em with implantable RFID? ...in the hospital nursery while a social security number is issued simultaneously. ;(
