Dale Earnhardt Jr. knows some fans are upset about his plan to drive a replica of his father's famous No. 3 car at Daytona in July, but thinks it is a fitting way to honor the seven-time champion's NASCAR Hall of Fame induction.
"I think everybody knows I'm pretty careful about all that kind of stuff,'' he said Friday at Richmond International Raceway. "It just seems like a reasonable opportunity and it seemed like if there is a time to ever do it, this is one of those times.''
Earnhardt announced his plan Thursday to drive the Wrangler car in the Nationwide Series race at Daytona. The announcement came on what would have been his father's 59th birthday. Dale Earnhardt died in a crash in the season-opening Daytona 500 in 2001.

Good grief. Tee shirt sales must be slumping.

Dale Jr., though, doesn't think it's fair to expect it to remain shelved forever.I do.

I don’t have any issues with it but he isn’t his father.

I’m actually surprised it’s taken this long for Jr. and Childress to put this together...

I hated that man for years but in the last few before his death I softened on him and would even root for him to win against the kids.
Still a Martin fan though.

I’d still rather see it retired forever.

I’d like to see it retired forever too, but if anyone is going to drive that # — Junior would be my choice.

At 59, had he lived Sr. would be retired by now and who knows who would have been associated with the 3 now. Possibly a serious let down.
At least now my memories will be of him and I think fittingly Jr.
If he wins the 4th of July race, so much the better!

This is no big deal. This is a Nationwide race— not a cup race. #3 will not be in a cup race.
I agree, the sales must be down—the sheeple will flock to the trailers to buy the new t shirts. But there still will not be #3 in the cup race.

Do you honestly believe that this won’t be the talk of the weekend?
There will be flashback stories all week
A brilliant marketing idea.

I’m sure it will be yapped about all weekend. There will still not be a #3 on a cup car. As far as marketing is concerned, I don’t think Jr needs the cash. I read somewhere he makes 30 million a year.

I dont have any issues with it but he isnt his father. No one is. And Jr has carried that burden for his entire life. What's your point?

I just think retiring the #3 is the way to go and it applies with no exceptions.
To me, that is the ultimate tribute for what The Man gave to the sport.
