The other issue is that the students on the committee who reviewed the short list of speakers for commencement don’t recall seeing his name on it initially. They passed over selections like Tony Blair. To the students, it looks too much like he bought the invitation because of the financial contributions. The other issue is that they don’t really want to hear from someone who they are indebted to financially for their student loans.

When I can get hold of my SU contact student, I’ll see who else was on the short list.

So someone loaned them money in a free and open transaction, and that makes them the enemy? Maybe they'd prefer there were no student loan lenders?
