To truly understand the comedy of Monty Python, one must first go back to the 1950s and listen to the Goon show.

Many of the skits from MPFC got their roots from Spike Millikan, Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers (Yes THAT Peter Sellers).

I recommend this site for a bit of PRE-MPFC humor.
