5-year-old mauled by pit bull in Hurricane
April 20, 2010
HURRICANE -- Many owners of American pit bull terriers say the dogs get a bad rap, that they can be as sweet as any other breed and can make great family pets. But if a pit bull attacks, one Utah mother says the results can be devastating.
A pit bull mauled Katie Weeks' 5-year-old daughter, Saleena Wickward, in Hurricane Monday night. The little girl is now recovering from reconstructive facial surgery.
"She's already asked her mom for a mirror, and we're waiting on that," Weeks says.
Right now, Saleena's face only resembles what she used to look like: swelling, stitches and staples consume her innocent face.
"I was so afraid to walk into that room and see my little girl because I just thought she would never look the same again," Weeks says.
But she says her daughter already looks better than she did right after the attack.
It happened Monday night in Hurricane around 5:30. Weeks says her daughter wandered to the next yard over to catch a caterpillar.
According to the dog owner, Saleena was throwing rocks at the pit bull. Then, it lunged at her face.
"The dog was on a chain, but he grabbed her and didn't let go," Weeks says.
The owner had to pry the jaws off of Saleena's head. Neighbors called 911.
Saleena stayed conscious while waiting for an ambulance.
"We got a towel and pushed the skin up against her, and just wrapped it around and held it there until 911 got there, and just rocked her and tried to comfort her the best we could," Weeks says.
At Dixie Regional Medical Center, the 5-year-old had six and a half hours of reconstructive surgery. Two plastic surgeons helped put Saleena's face back together.
Stitches go from the middle of her lip, to her nose and cheek, then around her ear. A plate and screw are stabilizing her fractured cheek.
Now, doctors and family members will have to wait to see if there's any nerve damage. In the meantime, weeks says her emotions are all over the place.
"Fear, hope, more prayers than I've ever said in my life," she says.
The dog owner didn't want to comment. Weeks doesn't place blame on the owner. She says the dog had played with her kids before.
Hurricane police say the pit bull is with animal control.
You told them that you’re illegally poisoning animals?
I *highly* doubt that, especially since they [by your own admission] have failed to do absolutely *anything* about your “situation”.
[The ASPCA might be more interested in your “hobbies”, I reckon]
You *are* a straight-shooting hoot!....:))
[Is Courtney Love still alive? I’d totally forgotten she even existed]
;D
I’ll bet my life on it!!!,,,

How cool is that?
Felony charge with 10 years jail and $25,000 fine.
Damn!

Thank you for some sanity here.
I can put anything I want on > MY < property,,,
This land belongs to > Me <,,,
Get that through your thick skull!!!...
LOL!
Way to go, goof.
You just listed all your weapons for all of Obammy’s alphabet agents who lurk here, looking for “domestic threats”.
Me?
I have NO guns.
Not a single one.
[not even so much as a slingshot or pointy stick]
I’ll go sit in the corner and smirk smugly, thanks...:)
:)
[and why would you be "taking Harley to the fence line to get a clear shot" if the dogs weren't on *their* side of the fence?]
Just wanted to reiterate that, in case anybody's "watching".
:)
“the strychnine-laced hamburger meatballs that Alger threw into her yard.”

One more time on this forum, American Pit Bull Terriers are a large, aggressive breed of dog. If one is unaccustomed to handling large, aggressive canines also including Rottys, Shepherds, Dobermans, Boxers and even Collies and others, get an ankle biter or better yet, become a cat person.
If you are unable or as in most cases, unwilling to socialize your animal so that it isn’t going to try to destroy every other mammal that crosses it’s path, you should consider the liability you are placing yourself in and reconsider your choice of pets.
If I shoot you with my gun, no matter what the circumstances, you can sue me and will most likely prevail. If my dog bites you, you have the same recourse. If you die from a gunshot that I am responsible for, I will do some time. If you die from injuries inflicted by my dog, same thing.
I have many guns. I pride myself in knowing both the location and the condition of all of them, all of the time. I take the same pride in how I care for my animals.
Large canines, especially Bulldogs, bear close scrutiny. Any unusual display of aggression or an attack on any of the other animals, or people on the farm will be immediately addressed by my other constant companion out here, my Walther P22.
I’ve had a lot of Bulldogs over the years, haven’t had to put too many down for going crazy.
OK, let me have it, I can handle anything ya’ll can dish out, I’m a Pit Bull owner.
You put poison down in ~your~ yard where ~your~ dog might eat it?
You can backpedal *now* all you want.
What you wrote is what will be read, as it was written and intended.
Have a nice day now, ya hear?.....:)
X2- All my guns/ammo are LEGAL,,,
Everything I put on > My < property is LEGAL!!!
O’Bammy can Kiss My ASS!!!,,,
FWIW : I came back from the ‘Nam 42 years ago Yesterday!!!
I ain’t got a lick of fear left in me,,,
Be sure you tell them to bring their own bodybags...
Oh wait, yeah there is. Bad dog owners are a problem for everyone; I can't let my kids play in the front yard because of the dog packs that roam around our street. I don't think there's a single person on the hippo list that will deny the danger a neglected or overly indulged pit bull presents.
I can’t let Harley run loose in the yard,,,
He is kept on a short leash so I can pull him behind me
in case I have to shoot that .44 and kill a pit in this
fenced yard,,,
And yes I open carry,,,
The local cops know this too,,,
That is also legal in my state...
Let's face it Chet, this thread has nothing to do with a little girl being brutally mauled.
It has everything to do with your vendetta against a type of dog.
No pitbull...no postie.
You seem to have a fixation on homosexuality.
What's the name of that mountain you live on?
Post a warning in your title if you intend to post graphic images.
Show some consideration for others. Not everyone gets your thrill out of viewing them.
Islam hates "pit bulls".
You DOPers are have more in common with muslims than any dog.
I bought the nicest harness for Odhinn from these people:
http://www.doberman-dog-breed-store.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=3
He’s identical to the Dobe shown wearing it and we had a rip of a time finding a harness that fits his wide chest/girth *and* allowed for the typical Dobe “high/wide withers”.
[because of those withers, “normal” harnesses tend to ride forward and chafe their armpits...can’t have that!]
Not only does it have a grab handle on the top and safety-reflective piping, it’s got pulling rings on the side.
I added my own sheep fleece padding for the front strap and it really worked out great.
When he’s old enough, hubby is going to build him a cart.
[now all he needs is a bridle and we’re good to go]...LOL
