I went and read the article. I loved the movie, but the writer is wrong. The character played by Clint Eastwood doesn't change his ways and learn his "racist" views of the neighbors was wrong. He never was racist to begin with--as shown by how he treats his friends the dago barber and the mick contractor. He treats people the way they deserve to be treated. And the neighbors earn his respect, he doesn't change.
