A farmer was plowing his field west of Mexico City in the 1940s when he noticed smoke spewing from a fissure in the earth. He ran for his life and witnessed the birth of a new volcano, Paracutin. It erupted for 8 years straight and did enormous damage, burying an entire village in the process.

Mexico, like the U.S. and all countries around the Ring of Fire, is host to many active volcanoes. One is located not far from the Mexicali earthquake of several weeks ago.
