One thing I have learned. If I ever have to live near someone who keeps pit bulls, I will certainly purchase a Mossburg and keep it loaded and close to hand.
Open question to all FReepers: Is there a breed of dog that can actually deal with an agressive pit bull attack? I am thinking Irish Wolf Hound or Rhodesian Ridgeback, but they are so huge and expensive to maintain.
That's because it isn't true.

My Wolf/Malamute/Shepherd ate more than one dog- including a pit bull. The pit bull didn't even tear him up that bad. (though a Rot did, as did other Malamute/Huskies).
Another pit bull...
I would suggest a 45ACP.
though the Ridgeback would fare better...Irish Wolfies while magnificent creatures are coursers and have had their once more aggressive nature bred out more so
the most likely dog to handle a Pit would be either a Leopard Catahoula or a big Staffie or a Standard American Bulldog..which I own though that had NOTHING to do with my choice...I just always wanted one ...they are the old Southern hunt and catch bulldog you see in all the old romantic landscapes of the late 1700s and early 1800s which were revived 40 years ago and split into the Southern Scott mastiff nosed and the bulkier wrinkled Johnson Classic style...mine is black with long snapper tail and floppy laid back ears and a lippy snout...and sorta lanky but powerful..27 inches withers and 130 lbs at 2-3 years maturity..pic of his mirror image daddy on my profile page
mine is very human friendly but tough as nails and strong as a gargoyle and built like one too...70 lbs at 7 months...but beware they are a LOT to handle and need a lot of family time and running and cannot be left with lapdogs...EXTREMELY underfoot family dogs....of all the large guard breeds I've owned I've never had one that wants to be piled up with us 24-7 so much...doesn't run off more than 30-40 yards on out back 10
other than that Dogos probably might survive too against a Pit...
Caucasian mountain dog too
Pitbulls are the preeminent dog fighter which is not a reason for anyone to own one...I loathe sport dog fighting...it is brutal and Godawful
Chet hates Pits...he has reasons I reckon but I don't share it
one should remember that just because a dog like a Pit is a strong dog fighter does not translate into a potent mankiller or guard...if it did then more highly trained perimeter dogs would be Pits instead of Shepherds, Rotts , and Dobies....
a true pitbull is only around 55-60 pounds as a male and rangy...many folks now have crossed them with bigger bulldogs or Rotts to make a bigger Pit...but from what I read the stamina question still makes the rangier smaller Pits more potent dogfighters...for what that is worth....I live in semi rural Tennessee and do venture into the mountains and know real hillbillies and have been told though I refuse to attend a dog fight
don't mind cock fights though...I just don't think man's best friend or even cats should be abused
needless to say toddlers should not be unsupervised around the dogs I've mentioned...or any dog really but larger dogs can inflict mortal injury so much quicker...that is common sense
I did not get a Pit to replace our Dobie because my wife was wary...and it was not a battle worth fighting and besides we narrowed it down to her approval for either a Cane Corso, Anatolian Shepherd or American Bulldog...all pretty damned good choices for a mommy to suggest...we did not want to try to replace our beloved Dobie with another and we waited a few years for baby to get past 3
