he Monty Python legend racked up a $5,000+ taxi fare. Currently there are no flights in the area servicing Britain, and Cleese's assistant figured the stranded star could take a taxi to Brussels, then catch the Eurostar train from there back to London.
Cleese told Norway's TV2 that necessity drove him to it.
"We checked every option but there were no boats and no train tickets available. That's when my fabulous assistant determined the easiest thing would be to take a taxi."
The official total was reported to be £3,300 to take a cab from Oslo to Brussels.
Cleese, 70, said: "We checked every option but there were no boats and no train tickets available. That's when my fabulous assistant determined the easiest thing would be to take a taxi."
Vic, don’t say the baby’s name!!!
That’s what I’ve posted on another forum. It wouldn’t even be necessary to cross the entire Atlantic by ship. If airlines could fly passengers between North America and the Azores or Canary Islands, cruise ships could then take passengers between those points and Europe. This would save time over having to cross entirely by ship. There are bound to be lots of cruise cancellations due to the inability of passengers to reach embarkation points for cruises, so cruise ship owners could use the business.
Must have been a 'water taxi' then.
Or am I missing something here?
Renting a car for a one way trip is pretty expensive. The way he did it he got a car and driver.
He wanted to get his “dead”parrot home!
There are ferries that run to and from Norway.
He tried that.
Looks like life imitated art for Cleese.
BTW this is a great movie if you haven't seen it.
Maybe his hovercraft was full of eels.
“.they bought a new car, drove it back home and then sold it.”
Probably didn’t make money on the deal, but one would hope their net loss was something less than $5K.
Yes, you are missing something (grin). The Oresund Bridge-Tunnel was completed in 1999 and connects Copenhagen, Denmark to Malmo, Sweden and thus it is possible to drive from Norway to the rest of Europe. There was a great episode of BBC's "Top Gear" where that link figured largely in a race from England to Norway.
They were losing a lot more stuck in Vegas while their business remained unattended to.
It worked out it was cheaper than paying for a taxi ride home :)
Beautiful plumage.
It looks like THESE GUYS saw that clip and liked it.
A sketchy Monte Python sketch I presume
Actually, it’s Fawlty Towers.
“it was cheaper than paying for a taxi ride home”
No criticism of Cleese’s assistant, but I imagine that if you gave any American MBA student (or even most college students) the “challenge” of finding a way to return Cleese home for under $5,000, the vast majority could figure out how to do so. I’m guessing that regardless of education, the majority of adults with any appreciable real-world experience could do so as well. I’m pretty sure that if Cleese didn’t have money to burn, he too might have inspected more carefully whether the taxi truly was the least-cost approach.
It appears that, in theory at least, one could take a taxi from Oslo to SE Asia. I don't think I could afford even the tip, let alone the taxi fare.
