Dad who saved daughter by stabbing mastiff said mauling was 'like a horror film'

The dad who stabbed his dog to death after it savaged his two-year-old daughter said yesterday it was like a scene from a horror film.

Gereth Sim, 31, is haunted by the moment the French bullmastiff, named Trigger, sank its teeth into little Taylor's face.

He said: "I had turned away for two seconds and heard a growl. The next thing the dog had Taylor on the floor and was biting her face.

"I punched him until he let her go, then stabbed him with a kitchen knife. Taylor's face was covered in blood. It was like a horror film.

"Every time I close my eyes, I can still see it."

Taylor, of Eltham, South East London, was still critically ill in hospital last night after emergency surgery.

She needed skin grafts after horrific injuries to her jaw, nose and mouth.

Her mum Charlene, 23, said: "The operation was a success. We're just praying she will pull through."

hell I don’t know...here’s a list of dogs who are more often cropped...many like schnauzers, boxers, Great Danes, Doberman pinschers and miniature pinschers are not known as fighters....btw....I have seen pits uncropped

btw...my ABD has neither cropped ears or docked tail

no doubt that some ear cropping may be for fighting or formerly ratting in tunnels etc but some today is just asthetic standard

male Dobies look like crap with floppy ears in my opinion...Great Danes too...bitches I don’t think it matters...very few bitches look like full standard anyhow....males win Westminster 2 to 1

not cropping dogs and not docking tails is the new PC mindset

sorta like can;’t take a dog-cat from a private pound anymore if you let it go outside or plan to hunt it...better to euthanize it

PETA folks are as wacked as dog fighters

you betcha no kill pet shelters kill them when they have to or pay someone...they get caught doing it all the time

Functional purpose??

what are you talking about?

There is only one reason to crop the tail(called a DOCKED TAIL). it was done to avoid taxes. In england a working dog was immune to taxation but had to have it’s tail chopped off in exchange for tax exemption. ie the tail was the payment. The procedure stuck for certain breeds and was carried over to america. eventually the tail tax was abolished but the procedure was maintained because people got used to seeing certain breeds without tails and expected them to look that way.

blame the kennel club and those idiotic dog shows.

As for ears...big floppy ears are a byproduct of domesticating wolves and wild dogs into domestic dogs. The big floppy ears are really an undesireable side effect. People figured out they could make the ears stand up if they trimmed part of them off...ie reduce the weight of the ear.

there are certain times when it makes sense to eliminate the ear entirely...fighting dogs for example. But these are minimal exceptions.

Well, I would be fascinated to know if he has a dog, and what kind it happens to be...Chet99 seems perfectly rational in-forum, but this whole pitbull thing is extremely important for some reason.

My dog had his tail cropped because of a birth defect, a bad kink in the tail.

It would have interfered with his defecating.

a German Shepherd

But what is clear is that by the 1920s there was a public perception that the German Shepherd had few redeeming qualities, and that the breed’s only contribution to society was in increasing the number of dog attacks in the community. We find the public debate in full swing concerning the nature and disposition of the German Shepherd by the early 1920s. After a volley of letters debating the behavior of the German police dog was printed in the editorial section of the New York Times, Mrs. Dorothy Holden voiced her opinion in a response dated July 11, 1924:
“I live in a neighborhood where there are at least ten within a radius of a half a mile, and during the past year six women and children (including my own daughter) have been attacked by them without provocation—in two cases the victims were only saved from being torn to pieces by the intervention of the dogs’ owners.
“They do not seem to attack men or large dogs and if even a small dog shows fight they usually slink off. And for any usefulness they may have or endearing qualities, I do not notice…and with only a thin veneer over the wolf, they are certainly not to be trusted.
“They are being imported in such numbers and are breeding so fast that they will soon be as numerous as the rabbits in Australia, and are a far greater menace.
“In conclusion, we live in a semi-besieged state of terror from these German police dogs, and the law does not seem to be able to help us, as their owners are wealthy.

Indeed, this woman was not alone in her beliefs. In 1925, a New York magistrate proposed a ban on the German Shepherd dog in Queens. The City Magistrate of Queens requested that the County Health authorities ban German police dogs from the city, as they had been “branded a menace.” Magistrate James J. Conway was also quoted as saying the German police dog was:

“…savage, vicious and bred from wolves...In the city at the present time there are thousands of these savage dogs. The police records show that there are 2,000 German police dogs in Queens...Hundreds of persons have been victims of dog bites during the past year, and the majority of biting dogs were police dogs. The dogs should be barred from the city.”
The New York Times, January 7, 1925

I guess the bottom line is that you should always watch and supervise any dog around children no matter what. They are usually at eye level with the dog and the animal may mistake them for another dog. This could cause the dog to pick a fight with what they believe is another animal.

You know, you are probably right in not singling out a particular dog. Just about any dog can snap. But a breed like a pit bull can cause more damage due to the fact that their jaws snap shut on their victims. This is probably why they have a really bad reputation.

That must have been absolutely horrifying. It just goes to show you, you really can’t know what is going on in an animals head. It’s always smart to play it safe around any dog. Always be on guard.

What you have in your picture is a Bullmastiff. The article says the the dog involved is a French Mastiff, which is also known as a Dogue de Bordeaux. If you ever saw the movie Turner & Hooch, that dog was a French Mastiff/Dogue de Bordeaux. You might want to post a correction.
