An environmentalist was "thoroughly embarrassed" after he caught, cooked and ate a rare crayfish.
Christopher Hemsley, 41, claimed he thought he was netting the non-native signal crayfish, which is not protected.
South Lakeland magistrates fined Hemsley, from Leeds, £4,000 yesterday.
