What do you mean you can’t make a left turn?
you know how hobbes always says that instead of a left, you just make 3 rights? well that’s what they do. you cannot make a left turn off a roadway, you have to go right on some roundabout thing that takes you across that roadway by taking 3 rights. it’s ridic.
It’s called a Jughandle.
yep.
they were agog that in the OLDEN DAYS you were never able to pump your own gas, and in fact that’s what their father did as a youth at his dad’s gas station in upstate NY. now you cannot find a single full serve station in NOva.
nannystate NJ doesn’t trust its citizenry to cross a hwy against traffic?
It’s inefficient.
oh ok, nannystater.
Left turns are dangerous.
On Rt 22 here, they have taken to completely dividing the highway and adding jughandles. That way you don’t have people trying to go into and out of businesses crossing the highway.
The left turners down in Baytown, Texas irked me. If I was trying to leave a shopping center and turning right at a “non-main” entrance, there would always be people waiting to turn left from there across 4 lanes of traffic.
Instead of sensibly driving to the other end of the parking lot and making a left from the traffic light.
Trust me. You should see the idiots trying to make a left on
to Livingston Ave. after dropping their kids off at the elementary school in the morning.(It’s far easier to drive around the block to the light on the next street.)
IIRC, it’s not all that easy to go against traffic in your cozy little hamlet either... :P
you have a constitutional right NOT to be irritated, hence the gov’t will mandate jughandles : )
LOL GMTA...
xsboy told his father after our Sat AM jaunt in manhattan that he didn’t think that driving in NYC was any tougher than driving in DC. on a SAT AM, maybe not.
It’s simple actuarial fact. Left turns cause accidents. Minimizing them on busy thoroughfares allows traffic to move without fear of being cut off by some idiot trying to go to Target. And it simplifies decision making (and lets face it, not everyone is a great driver) by ushering turners to traffic signals where right-of-way is clearly given.
lots of things are dangerous in life, i guess that’s why we need the gov’t to make sure we don’t hurt ourselves....
Yep. And we don’t need no wimmen pumping gas!
are you standoffish and taken aback if a stranger speaks to you? i am still chuckling at how i shook the lives of those NYers by daring to speak to them, by asking a question! LOL!
I suppose we shouldn’t have stop signs or traffic lights either. Just a big ol’ wild west pissing contest.
How would you like your commute then?
Engineers study traffic and utilize various tools in order to allow traffic to flow in an orderly fashion, balancing the use of the road for locals with the people who are merely passing through.
One of those tools is the jughandle. It’s not for everywhere, but for high volume roads it is appropriate.
