Memphis Girl Mauled by Pit Bull: Family Wants Dog Euthanized
Reported by: Kevin Holmes Email: kholmes@myeyewitnessnews.com Last Update: 7:58 pm
SHELBY COUNTY, TN A Memphis child was mauled by a pit bull while inviting her friends to her birthday party. The 8-year-old girl is recovering at Le Bonheur Childrens Medical Center, as authorities decide what should happen to the dog that attacked her.
Shelby County Sheriffs Deputies say the dog was chained to a tree in a front yard on Northdale Drive when it got loose.
Hailey King has undergone several surgeries to repair her hands, face, legs and shoulder. Late Saturday, April 10, 2010, she was unable to move one arm and her mother Eileen says she can barely move the other one.
Kim Shreve managed to help free Hailey from the dog.
When I looked down in the cove," Shreve tells myEyewitnessNews.com, "there was a little girl and she was balled up in the fetal position and a large brown pit bull was on top of her and mauling her. She was covered in blood.
After this attack, Eileen King wants the pit bull to be euthanized, but theres a chance that wont happen. Right now the one-year-old pit bull is under observation at the Memphis Animal Shelter.
If Shelby County Health officials consider the dog not to be vicious, it will be returned to its' owner. And that's an option that angers both Shreve and King.
Its not like you can tap the dog on the hands and tell it not to do it again," says Shreve. "The dog drew blood."
King agrees. This is vicious," she says, "and that dog needs to be put to sleep.
The dogs owner, LeToya Redwing was cited for having a loose dog. The Shelby County Sheriffs Office says this incident is still under investigation. Additional charges could follow.
How about a counter attack?? How about a few positive pit bull stories??
I’m a moderator on a positive pit bull friendly website... I’d love for you to come join, and see the thousands of responsible owners that have “good” pit bulls.. but you never see our dogs on the 5:00 news... there’s a reason for that, but really, more stories should be about our dogs, than the ones owned by irresponsible owners. I own 2, they are the greatest dogs I’ve ever owned.. but it takes work, time and dedication to them. Oh, and I’m not a thug, or “trailer trash” as was mentioned earlier in a post. I’m a white female 45 yr old business professional, and my husband is a news anchor for a tv station outside of Memphis. No, we may not fit everyone’s assumed image of the owners of this breed... but it’s the only breed we will own.

When you enter a thread decrying the brutality of the breed, you’re often horrified by the brutality of the posters who cry for the annihilation of it.
Some of the posts I read here make me VERY glad I don’t live anywhere near that poster.
That some of them even “brag” on the number of or physical damage wrought upon their “kills” is even more disturbing.
It is always my fervent hope that passersby do not judge all those who post here based upon the relatively few aberrants amongst us.
Joe’s “good people”...:)
What you mean by “those people” ? LOL ... you dog hater.
I’ve been around pit bulls before and they can be really good dogs. But due to the way they have been bred over the centuries since ancient Grecian times, to be fierce and have that innate ability to intimidate any enemies of the owner perceived or real, they also have an unpredictable nature that lends them to attacking those they should not. The breeds of dogs that I don’t care for are pit bulls, chows, and sharpeis.
I almost got into a fight with a pitbull a few months ago. Scared the living daylights out of me. I thought for sure I would either end up in the hospital or be dead since this was a larger one.
No matter how well bred, trained, or taken care of a pit bull is time and time again you will hear pit bull news stories where the owner of the dog that just mauled or killed some one say, “He was a really good dog. My dog has never done anything like this.”
You say, “but it takes work, time and dedication to them.” Any dog bred to be aggressive requires such, but many people do not have the work ethic to do so. It doesn’t matter if it is pit bulls, presa canarios, or cane corsos.
At any given moment they’ll turn on their owners or the children of the owners. Why subject yourself or others to the unpredictable predatory nature of such a breed of dog? I’ll take an Irish Wolfhound any day. They are gentle with human beings but fatally vicious with wolves. They weren’t bred for fighting or territorial domination.
Why did you choose, out of the many breeds of dogs, to own pit bulls?
The neighbor routinely threw rather large chunks of meat which Corky caught and consumed.
One day as I was washing dishes I looked out the kitchen window that overlooked the neighbor's yard and observed the usual meat tossing ritual, except this time the neighbor tossed a rock which Corky caught with a startled yelp.
I rushed out and asked the neighbor why the rock?
He replied with a smile, “So he don't trust nobody”.
From that day forth no one, not even his kids, could get near 11 month old Corky without evoking growls and snarls.
Had I not seen what occured with my own eyes I always would have wondered why a nice dog turned bad.
Of course not all pitbull owners throw rocks and some dogs just “snap” but people do foolish things with their dogs and wonder at the consequences.
If your dog attacked someone, would you admit that you knew he had behavioral issues, but kept him anyway? Of course not! You'd try to paint yourself as an unwitting dupe of an evil dog's duplicity, as so many do.
LOL! I am being a racist can’t you tell? Yeah I really hate my Black Mouth Cur who sleeps at the foot of my bed and my 3 Jack Russel Terriers who sleep IN my bed between my husband and me. I really hate those dogs and all the other dozens and dozens I have rescued and cared for my entire life. Just HATE ‘em! And the portraits of dogs that I paint, I do that to remind myself how much I hate them. Sure!
By “You” I meant not you personally, but you as in “the type of you that would choose to own a vicious dog”.
What a perfect bastard.
Welcome aboard Mollies Nana! Hope you stick around!
What a jerk; and to think my dog gets affronted when I toss him a piece of broccoli instead of chicken guts...
JoeProBono .....
Couldn’t get him to say narry a word for over a year.
Now he won’t shut up.
