There was a constant battle between one of my old supervisors who insisted all staff must wear ties as per the company manual and the director of maintenace who feared our ties getting caught in the machinery we were inspecting and operating. It was easy to be yelled at by the supervisor to “get that tie on or be written up if I have to tell you again”and minutes later an irate utility man demanding “get that tie off,it is a safety violation!”
So it became customary to carry a tie in a pocket and quick put it on if the supervisor approached....

Years ago we were required to wear ties, and also had to go into the factory to provide technical assistance. Some of us took to wearing clip-on bow ties. Or we also sometimes wore clip-on long pre-ied ties, and tucked them inside the shirt just below the top button when going into the factory.

If you go down on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, each specialist’s booth is covered with ties that have been cut off from floor brokers who have gotten into altercations with the specialist.

They just cut off the tie while on the neck of the broker, thren tack it up on the wall.
