While it is true many thugs will use pit bulls to guard their goods, it isn’t because they did a bunch of research to find the best type of dog for the job. If they were educated, they would never choose a terrier, but because of the urban mythology associated with the breed and the status it represents (as stupid and backwards as that may be, they’re dirt cheap and everywhere), they do.

Very seldom do I hear about a pit bull trained to guard property being involved in a bite incident. Most of the time, the dogs are either running loose or chained up, and if they are inside the home, they are almost always intact, in a pack of two or more, or a breeding pair.

“I have encountered far too many human aggressive Pit Bulls roaming around their owners country estates attacking any human being they see on the road to buy for a second this idiocy that they are not “human aggressive”.”

Key words here are “roaming around”. Dogs left to their own devices are dangerous. Working dogs need direction, exercise, and a boss, not whatever they want.

“And it is not entirely the number of incidents or the likelihood, as opposed to a different breed. Even if you presuppose that a firecracker and a stick of dynamite is equally likely to explode, a reasonable person must note that the consequences of each are not equally as dangerous.”

True, but there is no evidence that pit bull bites are on average worse than other breeds. In fact, a recent study shows the opposite.

Notice that labs rank number one in bites, and on a severity scale, when comparing dogs who have been involved in ten or more attacks, pit bulls ranked seventh in severity, below Dalmatians. Both links will provide information, but if you don’t want to read all 40-some pages of the top link, the second link is more of a summary, and notes the important details of the study.

Their purpose is often as a guard dog.

Guard dog = human aggressive.

A pit bull is aggressive in its yard, and it is aggressive when out of its yard. It is an aggressive animal.

The capability to inflict damage is much higher with a Pit Bull than most other dogs. In fact THAT is the reason many Pit Bull owners pick that breed, because of its potential for and capability for inflicting grievous bodily harm.

There are reasons why it is the dog of choice for Gangs with meth labs to guard. Besides being dirt cheap and everywhere, they look and act scary. That tends to keep people away, which is the function of a guard dog - acting and being aggressive towards humans.

The breed is a favorite among the Gang bangers BECAUSE it is aggressive towards humans. It wouldn't make a good meth lab guard dog if it wasn't.

You both make too much sense and overuse factual statistics.

STFU.

It's even more unusual to hear about a trained fighting dog attacking anyone. In fact, I don't know if I've ever seen a story about that happening...
