Pit bulls attack 6-month-old boy

By SARAH BURGE

Police are investigating a dog attack Saturday at a Murrieta apartment in which a 6-month-old boy was bitten in the groin, authorities said.

Animal control officials said the child lost his testicles in the attack.

Sgt. Bob Landwehr said today that police were called to a report of a dog bite shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday at an apartment complex at 26301 Arboretum Way. The mother and her friend had left the baby strapped into a portable carrier and unattended in a room with a pit bull and a pit bull mix, he said. It was not clear how long the baby had been left alone.

One or both of the dogs attacked the baby, tearing off his diaper and biting his scrotum, Landwehr said. The mother and friend came to the baby's rescue when they heard him scream.

Landwehr said the baby was taken to Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta and transferred to another hospital, but he did not have an update on the child's condition.

The dogs were seized by animal control, Landwehr said.

The owner of the dogs signed a release to allow them to be euthanized, said Willa Bagwell, director of Animal Friends of the Valleys, which provides animal control services for Murrieta.

Bagwell, who spoke with the mother, confirmed that the baby's testicles were bitten off in the attack.

Landwehr said no one has been arrested in connection with the incident, but the investigation is continuing.

“And that is a circular argument that arrives at a steaming pile of crap. You have just totally discounted all instinct for all animals. Pretty good for first try. Let me make this peerfectlyclear. If you want a retriever buy a lab, if you want a stock dog buy a border collie, if you want a pointing dog for hunting then buy a Brittany spanial.”

So, have you any experience with labs going on unstoppable fetching sprees? Is there no hope for these dogs to be anything other than what they were bred for decades ago? My mother had a black lab. She wouldn’t get NEAR water, didn’t care for fetching anything, and was dog-aggressive to the point that she once jumped out of the window of a moving car to attack another dog.

The most recent experience I have had with black labs was last week when I was attacked by one, along with three other dogs (one looked like a dachshund, another like a spitz, and another was a little ankle biter) while trying to save a cat from being ripped apart.

I had to get rabies shots directly in each puncture wound, as well as a single shot four more times on different days. I spent the first night in the ER and was able to go home with antibiotics and pain medicine, but I have been back to the hospital three times now. No news outlet has called, no police showed up, nothing. Animal control wasn’t even going to do anything, but since they received notification from the public health department, they were forced to call me. They didn’t even go to the street where the dogs are to find them.

But hey, labs were bred to retrieve waterfowl instinctually, so maybe I smelled like chicken?

1.) I am male. (Click on screen name.)

2.) I don’t need help from the LEOs.

(But thanks for your concern!)

Apparently, even if I am more of an American than Obama. :)

Seriously, how much of a goof does one have to be to post a statement
that on the face of it threatens your property in particular.
Anyone that fanatical, emotional and hateful probably shouldn't be anywhere near a gun.

I told the story recently of the farmer two farms down
who took his Lab, his gun and a shovel
for a walk to the back woods and came back alone.
Seems the Lab had “fetched” the farmers wife.

People who brag about shot placement and kill shots generally are lucky if they can unholster the weapon without shooting themselves.

I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.

All dogs are potentially aggressive.
That does not mean that they are aggressive.

Even if your dog does not exhibit aggression
the potential for aggression always remains.

A responsible dog owner recognizes this and acts accordingly.

Dog safety isn't just for irresponsible owners, it is for everyone.

BINGO!

You know what's not boring?

Watching Jenny the Hippo attack her tire.

I am not saying to reject the dog because it is dangerous, any more than I am saying to reject a gun because it is dangerous.

I am saying to be AWARE of the danger and not try to fool yourself that it is somehow only irresponsible owners who have aggressive dogs.

Total agreement here.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would post your sources.

If you want a dog that will bite, fight, and attack people then buy a pit bull....

We start our border collie pups right after they are weaned and before they have had much human contact and they work ducks. The fact that they do what they have been bred to do has nothing to do with any owner. IT IS ALL INSTINCT!!!!!

So according to you if a group of "pit bull" pups
were taken right after they were weaned
and put in proximity to a human they would attack the human.

they work ducks

My dog doesn't work ducks
but he will share a meal with them...

Funny, out of the 3 dogs on the farm... mine, a Newf and a Lab
mine is the only one the duck isn't aggressive towards.

And I would say that ripping the testicles off a 6 month old was an act of “human aggression”.

In this case that is questionable.

Are you back to the ridiculous argument that Pit Bulls are not demonstrably human aggressive?

I know that in the face of constant attack by the media against the breed there is a natural tendency to “close ranks”, but you cannot close ranks around the essential truth that the dog is an aggressive breed of dog, against humans or other dogs (as has been pointed out, one type of instinctive drive can easily channel into another drive) and by its build capable of inflicting serious damage.

My Bull Mastiff is an aggressive breed of dog, and capable of inflicting some VERY serious damage against either a human or a dog. They were bred to be a night watchman's companion to capture poachers (who often had dogs themselves), so I recognize that my dog is unsure if the next people or dogs we meet out on walks are neighbors we wave to or poachers who we would drive off the dogs and pin the person, often with some bites thrown in for good measure.

By recognizing this, and keeping it foremost in my mind; I avoid the potential for my usually sweet and very loving dog to attack anyone or their dog.

By trying to argue that which is demonstrably not true, you might start to believe it yourself and think that the danger is not there. But the danger is there.
