Weird stuff seems to go with major comets. When a comet appeared in A.D. 60, the people of Rome assumed it meant the impending death of their still new emperor, Nero. He responded by exiling a potential rival. When another comet turned up just 4 years later, ancient historians say he ordered the execution of dozens of nobles. It is said that Moctezuma II saw a comet in 1517 that foreshadowed the downfall of Aztec empire. In 1910, a wave of hysteria swept over the United States amid reports that Earth was about to pass through Halley's tail.

No hint of rain for the next several days. You would hate it.

You are right. Nothing but horrid sun here today. Fortunately I was able to hide out indoors most of the day.

We didn’t get the rain, just more wind.
Virga is rain that falls but evaporates before it can hit the ground. Common in the desert, and quite pretty to look at!

Morning in NC! 70 and sunny. We’re out of cat food, so I think we’ll go to Monroe to the Petsmart later, and stop by the used book store.

Seaman Anoreth ping! More news from Brunei:

***

They [the Brunei seamen] were more interested in whether or not regular people visiting Los Angeles got shot very often. Also the general prices of hotel rooms in Seattle and Charlotte. Plus they had some difficulty with the idea that people can own guns without a license and that women can do deck work. Moslems.

I’m doing some thing involving river boats and mangrove swamps on Saturday. Most of the officers are also going, which causes me to wonder if maybe I should cancel that idea. Hanging around in the general area of most officers is kind of nerve-wracking, as I have to watch my mouth and not say anything especially violent or get in political arguments. Plus, the JO’s and XO keep making fun of me for trying to explain why trade tariffs are bad while I was on watch. Also for making too much noise on the fly-bridge and for drawing pictures of Batman fighting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Also I ended up in the XO’s comic strip for swimming in the river with crocodiles. So it may be better to avoid the notice of the inhabitants of the wardroom for a while. I’ll decide in a day or so.

*****

Sending Seaman Anoreth to Brunei may have proved to be an unfortunate foreign policy move by Homeland Security. We’ll have to watch the news for disastrous fallout.

It’s just like talking to her in real life. Most of the crew are very confused by her ... but the ones who aren’t are the ones who will promote her.

Thank you, I'm going to try that. But first I have to clean out my refrigerator so I'll have someplace to put the leftovers.

You would not believe my refrigerator.

But on the other hand, maybe you would.

Think, "plastic storage bags with something squishy." Meh.

ping to 302 and 303

Seaman Anoreth has arrived in Brunei, with all faculties intact. Thinks she’s P.J. O’Rourke ;-).

Sounds like she's learning the value of the advice DH gave our kid when he headed for the Marines: 'Keep a low profile!'

Hard to do that when you're swimming with crocodiles though.

The XO (who seems to be a high-functioning alcoholic) thinks Anoreth is hysterical.

Shoot, we could buy Anguilla! Or at least part of it, like the Rockefellers did with St. Barth's.

Was there earlier news from Brunei? Is it upthread? Very cool. I’d go on and do the riverboat/mangrove thing and just try to keep my head down. It’ll be good practice in the art of Becoming Invisible.

Who won, Batman or the Turtles?
