Once-a-year beer sold out in advance

MUNSTER, Ind. - The Indiana brewers of Dark Lord, a thick stout available only once a year, said tickets allowing holders to purchase bottles have already sold out for 2010.

Three Floyds Brewing Co. said the brew would only be sold April 24, "Dark Lord Day," and only holders of "Golden Tickets" offered online would be allowed to purchase a 22-ounce bottle for $15, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.

Officials with the company said the tickets sold out less than half an hour after they were released.

The officials said "Dark Lord Day" draws beer fans from across the country, including many without Golden Tickets who bring their own beer to celebrate at the Munster brewery.

Brewer Barnaby Struve said the company takes measures to ensure the celebration stays under control.

"It's organized chaos," Struve said. "We have about 12 cops around with their Tasers all warmed up and waiting. Don't say I didn't warn ya."

Just another preview of the socialism to come: get your tickets for buying beer, bread, medicine, etc.

...would be allowed to purchase a 22-ounce bottle for $15...

Makes a six buck imperial pint of Guinness sound like a bargain!

Mmmmmm...beer, my favorite topic (okay, 2nd favorite). Founder's Brewery in Grand Rapids Michigan (my personal "Graceland") does Kentucky Breakfast Stout once a year. Folks line up around the block and they sell out quick. You can get it in stores for a couple weeks, at $20 per 4-pack. Bourbon-barrel aged and yummy.

I’m guessing this would represent an acceptable trade-off in your book. Especially if you could work a few strong pints into the equation! :)

April 24 is Dark Lord Day? The Dark Lord (Voldemort) was born December 31. WTF?

Please...do not put Oby-Soetoro in the same reference as Arrogant Bastard. I understand the connotation, but AB is something a punk-ass like him just wouldn’t understand.

After all...we are talking beer here.

Homebrewing Ping.

22 bucks a bottle?  Obviously homebrewing is a much better option.

That is however, one heck of a big beer and from all descriptions it sounds tasty indeed.

I also brewed a stout for limited release as Christmas gifts.

SG 1.112
FG 1.028

50 IBU
SA005 at 64 degrees

32 lbs 2 Row
8 lbs Wheat Malt
2 lb Munich 10L
2 lb Crystal 60
.75 lbs Crystal 120
.25 lb Crystal 150
1.5 lb dark brown sugar
1 lb Backstrap Molasses

44g Wilamette at 90
20g Magnum at 45
62g Wilamette at 45
6g Magnum at 1
46g Centenial at 1
28g Whole Cascade at 0

It was a whopper needless to say.  I ended up getting a 6 gallon batch of 6.5% partigyle out of the second runnings and could have made a 5 % 10 gallon but neglected to test the brix until it was too late.

The molasses flavors really came through along with the dark brown sugar.

Anyone else brew something special for Christmas ?

On or off the Homebrewers Ping List, let me know.

Cheers,

knewshound
