Yes. For a medium volume, household deep well pump (up to about 200 feet @ up to 15 gallons a minute or so), I'd go with a generator that will allow for an extra 4,000 watts over other loads (~ 18 amps @ 220V) because of the initial motor surge. If you don't want to pay enough for a diesel, some gassers are pretty cheap up to about 7,500 watts (surge). The overhead valve Chinese generators are okay (except for valve clearance adjustments every 100 hours of use) if filled with synthetic oil from the beginning and on time every time.
And as far as I found, just about all of the gas powered generators are made in China--even some familiar brands. There's even a Briggs and Stratton motor plant in China. ...heard some good things about an older diesel model made somewhere overseas, but I can't recall the brand. ...very much desired in, for example, some parts of India.
