“You’re reading too much into this. people talk of their homeland, meaning where their forefathers came from.”

My forefathers are from Sweden and Ireland. I have NEVER in my 40 plus years not ONE time referred to either nation as my “homeland.”

Have you ever been able to mark 'Swedish-American', or 'Irish-American' as RACE on a census form?

I take it your family has been here for many generations. First generation US-born childern of immigrants often have a different attitude. That is especially the case for those not of European descent. It's unfortunate, but true.
