Errors abound Sacramento math books

SACRAMENTO, April 1 (UPI) -- People in the Sacramento area might be pardoned for asking if the folks who publish their schools' error-filled math books are smarter than a fifth-grader.

The Sacramento Bee reported Thursday the new Macmillan/McGraw-Hill math books distributed to second-graders at 79 city-area elementary schools in the Sacramento City and Folsom Cordova districts include the equation: five times three equals five.

It's not an isolated faux pas, either. Folsom Cordova District Assistant Superintendent Janie DeArcos says fourth-graders have found 90 mistakes in their textbook and related materials, the newspaper said.

Seriously, this is lib public education at its best...

...the globalist elite are dumbing down American schoolchildren by design, so that the next generation can be dumb enough to become slaves.

They owned the bulk of the textbook publishing companies since WWI.

I remember spending hours working on a math problem trying to get the answer that was in the book and I couldn’t get it to work. The next day in class the professor tried to do the problem on the board and had the same result. The book had so many errors that we would do the example problems in class to determine which ones were wrong before assigning them as homework.

Wow. I never had to search for such errors in math textbooks when I was in high school. I don't remember the last time I found such a problem.

As long as they are taught to have sex with anyone and get an abortion without parental notification through the school, then nothing else matters to them.

Dumbing down America continues.

Guess what?

I consistantly failed algebra, so ... I can only assume you're posting an actually printed example from the book ... and it's wrong ... right?

All my math books were hand-me-downs from my valedictorian sister- no problem- she had all the answers in the margins.
In those days kids used the same textbooks for ten or more years before the pages all fell out.

It’s simply an example of an incorrect algebraic equation.

What do you mean by “advanced”?

I think government should get out of the school business.

Damn right, they should get the hell out.

When was the last time government did not have a hand in the school business?

That one is awesome. Did it really come out of that textbook?

No. The images of two math textbook covers I posted were random.

That would be great. No more school taxes. Parents pay for their children's education.

Joe Biden must've been the editor. A 3-letter word "J-O-B-S".

And here the MSM nationwide has been beating up on the Texas school textbook "controversy".

But then you don’t get exposed to the new math where 5x3=5

It's a trick. Both sides of the equation are multiplied by (pi-3) on the third line, so the equality holds when pi = 3 and (pi-3) is 0. This sort of thing is often presented as a cautionary lesson against "multiplying both sides by zero".

Note that substituting the expected answer, x = (pi+3)/2, into

(3-x)2 = (pi-x)2

gives

( (3-pi)/2 )2 = ( (pi-3)/2 )2

which is true.
