Heres one more reason to quit smoking. Cigarettes may contain pigs' blood. A new research has found that cigarettes may contain traces of pig's blood, which can spark concerns among religious groups.
Dangers of smoking are well known today. A strong association between smoking and a number of disease like lung damage, cancer and, of course, the intolerable stink, is established in previous studies.
Pigs blood in cigarette filters? A recent study in the Netherlands gives smokers one more reason to kick the habit, saying cigarettes may contain pigs' blood.
The Dutch research reportedly has identified 185 different industrial uses of a pig, including the use of its haemoglobin in cigarette filters.
Chapman fears the findings could be problematic for Muslims, Jews and vegetarians who refrain from pork consumption due to religious beliefs.
The Dutch research warns that pig haemoglobin, a blood protein, is being used to make cigarette filters more effective at trapping harmful chemicals normally ingested by humans when smoking.
During the course of the research, at least one cigarette brand sold in Greece was confirmed streamlined with pigs blood to make the product fairly effective in blocking harmful chemicals before they could enter a smoker's lungs, said Simon Chapman, University of Sydney Professor in Public Health.
Findings likely to raise concerns for religious groups Chapman fears the findings could be problematic for Muslims, Jews and vegetarians who refrain from pork consumption due to religious beliefs.
"I think that there would be some particularly devout groups who would find the idea that there were pig products in cigarettes to be very offensive," Prof Chapman said.
He added, "The Jewish community certainly takes these matters extremely seriously and the Islamic community certainly do as well, as would many vegetarians.
Pig hemoglobin information lacks on cigarette labels According to Prof Chapman, the status of smokes sold was unknown because the Tobacco industry was not required by law to disclose the ingredients of their products.
"It just puts into hard relief the problem that the tobacco industry is not required to declare the ingredients of cigarettes ... they say 'that's our business' and a trade secret."
"If you're a smoker and you're of Islamic or Jewish faith then you'd probably would want to know and there is no way of finding out, he said.
The newly discovered revelation that pig blood is in ciggies is that it should deter Jews and Muslims from smoking.
Couldn’t they smoke an unfiltered brand, roll their own, or smoke cigars?
Send them all to Mecca.
Fantastic, don’t most muslim men smoke?
Give ‘em to the Gitmo prisoners while they’re on the gallows. ...and then then tell ‘em what they’re smoking right before they drop.
Smoking is a liberal trait anyway. 20% of conservatives smoke, 31% of liberals.
Will Obama suddenly go cold turkey on the cigs?
I don’t smoke and I never have. Cigs are legal products and people may smoke them if they want, just not in my home. However, does it really need to get down to pig’s blood to make people quit? What about all the other crap? Pig’s blood would be the least of my worries if I smoked.
Joe Camel meets Porky Pig?
Ha Ha! I was in a Bed Bath and Beyond today and they had these Pig Pens- pens with a pig’s head where the eyes lit up and the pig oinked.
I wonder if any of those cigarettes are kosher for Passover.
I find it hard to believe. Sounds like another scam to force people to quit.
Everyone knows the pigs are in the White House.
Gives a new meaning to smoked ham.
That’s odd: when I smoked, I tried to NOT consume the filter, it was there to keep tobacco out of my mouth.
