None of these articles has ever explained how the bombs are detonated. It would not be a simple task.

How effective can the bombs actually be if they first have to penetrate clothing and flesh?
Seems their effect would be dangerous only to the carrier. [I am thinking of those stories of brave guys who jumped on grenades for example.]
Not at all. A simple keyfob like you use to unlock your car can be used to trigger something. Or a cell phone, like they use for IEDs.
