How do you succeed in a socialist/fascist state?
Become a high level functionary and don’t say a word to anyone about anything. Stay low enough to avoid most of the purges and murders but get high enough to afford some of the nicer things. How you raise your children is tough. Do you tell them the truth about the system and life and God and risk them betraying you if they turn, or saying something they shouldn’t even if they are loyal and getting you all imprisoned or impoverished, or do you hide the truth and let them be used by the state? Let me know your call on that. Then if there is anywhere to escape to, do that, especially if you have enough valuable information to be paid for it.
Run for office and join the enemy.
Join the Politburo.
There are lots of great overseas funds. Short treasuries. Large cap stocks may do ok (they are a part of the global economy). If you believe inflation will rear its ugly head, buy funds that invest in mining companies. Health care insurance funds will do ok for a few years (30M new customers just added to the rolls — I won’t do this on principle). Junk bonds will be OK, but after rates rise — there will so many companies whose bonds become junk. There will be some sectors that will be ok in the longer run, but those are unknown to me right now.
Create a bogus “clean energy research” company, suck up to ‘Rat party officials, then get a million dollar “stimulous” grant.
I think a killer investment would be in companies that produce automation equipment for retailers and fast food outlets. With Obamacare mandating that these companies provide full healthcare coverage to even part-time employees and their entire families, you are going to see a lot of them move to the automated self-checkout lines to reduce the number of employees.
Drugs and prostitution. And scam artistry.
Look at other Socialist lands. They are FULL of this. Crime crime crime. It’s the ONLY way to make money in those hell holes.

My wife and I are looking into medical tourism and international health insurance plans. We have ties to the Philippines and have connections with the owners of a resort. In the past people would poo poo something like this, but how many times have you gone to a doctor and he was Asian or Indian? They are good doctors, they have some very high quality hospitals and they are cheap compared to USA. Would take a few years to organize, but it can be and will be done. Death Panels will begin in about 5 years if not sooner. Grandpa needs a new hip at 70, sorry not cost effective, Obamecare will give out morphine like candy, cheaper than a hip. (Also with the morphine grandpa will expire sooner) Grandpa can fly to Costa Rico, the Philippines or India and get the new hip and then come home and dump the morphine in the toliet and walk in a protest against death panels. Prices will go up as more people take advantage, but you can get recontructive knee surgery in China for $2000.00, By-pass surgery in India for about the same cost. Even if they went up 50% in price, they are still cheaper than USA and that will keep premiums down.
Frankly, I expect a hugh blackmarket to grow, if the Mafia ever wanted to make a come back, this is the time. Blackmarket tanning salons, anyone can own a booth, cars (VAT will kill car sales), cigarettes and cigars, that is already happening.
I see international health insurance and medical tourism as more honest and open. Cost less than your current premiums and you can go to Asia or the Caribbean for care.
