One of the things that really annoyed me about CDs is the fact that even though there was so much more room on a CD than there as on an LP,
very few groups ever filled it up. To this day, your average CD has 40%+ dead space on it.
I still like CDs, because the sound is better than MP3s, but I rarely buy new disks. Second-hand stores rock.

Fact is, compact discs will some day be looked upon with the same curiosity as todays teenagers look at cassettes. Showing my age. I can remember looking back at the records my dad had as old-fashioned, when 8-tracks were in!

If there was any doubt that the compact disc is dying, look no further than Universals announcement that they will start selling most CDs for ten dollars or less.Seems to me this woman doesn't understand economics. The fact that they are dropping the price, would indicate to me, that they want to sell MORE CD's not less.
How she derives the premise that the drop in price portends the end of CD's is beyond me.

On top of the DL problems there’s the other issue that few bands and artists produce enough good material to justify a full CD purchase. Most CDs have only 1 or 2 decent tracks. It’s cheaper to just buy tracks you like.

CDs will be around until another permanent, physical medium comes along to replace them. If flash memory gets to be cheap enough and permanent enough, it might get there.
CDs are still necessary because none of the e-formats are permanent.

I knew a young lady in the office who took all of her CDs and downloaded them onto her computer then to her ipod, then trashed her Cds. I guess the RIAA lawyers will track her down and sue her.

To me the CD sound was never as good as a cassette tape. Too compressed and not as warm.

We live in an age of downloadable YouTube videos (I use the "1 click video downloader" add-on on firefox), terabyte hard drives, cheap multi-gigabyte flash thumb drives, WiFi and high-speed internet.
Kids can borrow CDs from the library and rip them to their hard drives. As soon as one copy exists on a hard drive, it can be copied to friends hard drives easily. They don't need file-sharing hosts any more (with their vulnerability to RIAA subpoenas) if they and their friends can merge music collections completely under the radar.

I download stuff off iTunes then rip it to CD’s to play in the car. I do not like the gizmo you plug into the cigarette lighter, that plays your iPod on an unused radio station, because I always get static. I like the CD’s because they play better, at least in my area.

I am buying up used VHS tapes of favorite movies. The ones I couldn’t afford to buy before.
Call me cheap. Me, I’m frugal.

While we are talking about music and the various formats, later today I hope to use my USB turntable to play my LPs and then burn them to a CD.
I received it as a gift last Christmas and am now just getting around to playing with it.
The software that comes with it has so many options and features,(many that I'll undoubtedly not use), but, if I can convert LPs to CDs, then I'll be happy.

I buy MP3’s of media I like and enjoy. I buy hard copies of things I adore and don’t want to risk, especially expensive cd’s. For instance, my Ella Fitzgerald songbooks. (These are not reallybooks; they are just the name of certain series).
Also, MP3’s come without any notes. As a real music lover, I like the notes along with info listed such as musicians.
