I know he was once a Democrat. Though his views and beliefs were what would be described as conservative. This is why he left the D Party and joined the R Party.

Aside: Though regretfully signing on to an abortion bill as Calif. governor he was still, personally, pro life. Realizing that sounds contradictory, Reagan did rue that decision.
