My bulldog owner’s handbook which I actually read...says same as you did.

Our last Dog...a big red Dobie with security training..coulda cared less about other dogs but he hated cats and was very very wary of strangers.

our bulldog is so far much less wary of people...

he loves to play tug of course and my kids clothes show it...a habit I am trying to break now before he gets too big...120 pounds or so at maturity at 2-3 years

man he loves to run...and pounce on moles...I let him run our little back pasture in late afternoon and he can really move...i do carry a lead just in case

"i think folks here don’t like who often owns and misuses these dogs....and they have a minor point there."

Agreed. A semi-automatic weapon, when malfunctioning and/or handled improperly, will invariably be more dangerous than a single shot.

An SUV, when malfunctioning and/or handled improperly, will invariably be more dangerous than a sub-compact.

A large, powerfully built dog, when malfunctioning and/or improperly handled, will be more dangerous.

For some reason, people are perfectly willing to take the human element and persona responsibility factors into account for the first two, but not the third. You are right about some irresponsible owners being attracted to pit type dogs, and the media loves to fuel this stereotype...it reminds me of the late 80's or early 90's when every shootout seemed to involve a "TEC-9" and how they now seem to involve an "AK-47". The media finds their rallying point or template, and won't stray from it, facts be damned.

To believe that certain physical characteristics imbue a dog with some sort of evil quality is absurd. Do pits attract some unseemly owners? Yep. Have their bloodlines been polluted to bring out the worst in them? In some cases...but these are all the doings of people acting irresponsibly, and sadly, when that happens in any field of endeavor, people get injured...but to restrict a liberty based on the irresponsible actions of a (highly visible, media spotlighted) minority should cause nothing but revulsion among people who value their freedom.

I simply don't understand how the crowd here will display nothing but harsh skepticism of the MSM's portrayal of the WOT, the Democrat agenda, firearm issues, economic #'s, global warming, etc., but be willing to, without question, buy into that very same media's inflammatory, highly biased, agenda driven portrayal of some nebulously defined breed or type of dogs. I find that simply mind-boggling.

I think the pit bull haters here fear protection class dogs or guard type dogs.

Dogs for them are Eukanaba commercials with Golden Retrievers dashing through a meadow with freshly shampooed locks glowing in the sunlight chasing a frisbee as the family unloads the mini van for a picnic on a checkercloth spread under a big red oak...kids playing...dog smiling...and so forth

we are not all like that....

I have never owned anything but guard or gun dogs...I do like French bulldogs though

and I have had guard dogs serve me and mine well just as a firearm would have in the same instance except a firearm doesn’t wake up and attack when intruder breaks in

it’s an instinct thing...I use a CPAP for my apnea...I wake up easy but can’t hear as well in my fairly rambling rural home..but my bulldog will hear it...or at least that is the idea...lol

right now he is still cage at night till he gets his poopie straight

i have a woman and little kids in my home...I want them protected

I suspect that's the very same reason tyrants (and muslims) would love nothing more than to see them banned altogether.

You’re wasting your time presenting facts when people come to these threads for their daily two minute hate.

Too bad these pit bulls make the news daily.

"Too bad these pit bulls make the news daily."

Well it's a good thing we have an entirely objective, agenda free media that you can place your trust in whole-heartedly in forming your opinions and worldview.

It used to be "Dog Bites Man" was not a news story, but the MSM has found far more money in, "It bleeds, it leads."

And no small time, local reporter ever glommed onto a trend in sensationalizing their reports to make their name, curry favor with larger organizations, wire services or lobby groups or push their personal agendas...

If only people knew that.

If only the pit bulls knew that maybe they’d stop attacking children and elderly women on a daily basis.

"If only the pit bulls knew that maybe they’d stop attacking children and elderly women on a daily basis."

So you expect the pitbulls to know, and exempt their owners and breeders from any role in the equation?

The bottom line is the pit bull community needs to find a way to police itself, otherwise it will be done for them.

"The bottom line is the pit bull community needs to find a way to police itself, otherwise it will be done for them."

"Pit bull community" is a pretty nebulous term. You could also say "Gun owners need to find a way to police themselves." If you've ever been to a well-run range, you'll know that the overwhelming majority of gun owners (in my experience and associations) are very responsible, conscientous people. That doesn't stop daily shootings or news accounts thereof. I spend far more time (basically daily) at a local dog park than I do at the range, and could log daily stories of pit bulls playing with other breeds without incident, but that would be purely anecdotal as are these news stories, and should be given similar weight in the debate. Essentially, irresponsible people who care little about the well-being of their dogs seldom bring them to the park to socialize them with people and other dogs. To ban the breed altogether would set a very, very bad precedent, and play right into the hands of PETA and any other number of *animal rights* groups.

Frankly, I'm glad to see pit and other dog owners starting to be held to account more often, and I suspect this will curb some of these admittedly horrific incidents.

Why not report other dog attacks?

Why not look at which other breeds also attack and kill?

last real study showed more Rott killers than Pits.

we know what you want..

and we are going to stop you...except in places where folks like you have already implemented your nanny state

I totally agree!

We live in the middle of San Antonio, and I wonder sometimes how many break-ins my dog has deterred, just by existing here. My Mom came to visit us awhile back, and there was no one home when she arrived. She told me that Swiper(the pit-mix) stood up in the window, staring at her, growling ever so slightly. He didn’t go ‘psycho-dog’ on her, didn’t bark, didn’t try to break through the window, he just stood there.
She waited to come inside until my husband got here, and then the dog was fine with her.

I appreciate that quality in a dog, and I suspect some of these people would also, if they lived in a similar situation.

My mastiff’s breeder said never to play tug of war with him, because sooner or later, he would not lose, and they have an excellent memory. He outweighs me by over 70 pounds, now, so, I’m glad we took that advice. If he has something in his mouth that I want, I can take it out, i.e. a pillow, or a toy. Or food. On the other hand, an English mastiff is a very relaxed sort of dog, bulldogs are much livelier.

Not that the mastiff isn’t quick—it’s shocking how fast he reacts to, for instance, a fly (he routinely catches them, mouths them, spits them out). And when he runs, he is incredibly fast, though he still manages to look relaxed. Rarely tense, except when he is on alert because of a stranger or strange animal around.

I like most large dog breeds, especially Newfies, English mastiffs. I don’t care much for presas, though, or the bandogs (sp?)

Go ahead and post them yourself.

we know what you want..

Stopping unnecessary maulings of children and elderly women.

and we are going to stop you...except in places where folks like you have already implemented your nanny state

The status quo, nor anarchy will get the job done. What do you propose?

Wake up. Those numbers are very large because those populations of dogs are very large. Your statistics mastery continues to impress.

Tell ya what brainiac - you go right ahead and buy a border collie and train it not to herd. But a scent hound and take it for a walk and train it not to stop and sniff every 3 feet. Good luck with that. After all, it all depends on the owner.

Honestly, I just don't get it w/ some of you pit bull apologists. A hypothetical - You all would have no difficulty thinking the woman who got her friend killed because she kept a chimp was stupid. You would have no trouble acknowledging that Siegfried and Roy worked in a dangerous profession (HIV not withstanding). That guy who lived w/ grizzlies until they ate him knew there was an elevated risk. Why? Because that is the nature of what those animals are.

YOU ALL know that a larger stronger dog poses a greater risk than a smaller and less powerful dog. And yet if it is a pit bull it is automatically no more dangerous than any other dog? Michael Vic didn't buy pit bulls because they are wonderful family dogs.

The statistics for Pits and Rotties show that they are disproportionately involved in attacks, and not just by a little. The evidence also shows that pits are much more likely to act beyond typical territorial defense responses - it will leave it's own property - go out of its way - to attack other dogs and people, sometimes when their territory was not even approached. Accounts of pit attacks indicate that, unlike other breeds, once an attack has started pit bulls will not break off the attack.

Pit bulls are very strong dogs. They have large powerful jaws - close to the top of the scale for dogs. They are disproportionately owned by idiots who do not train them properly. They have been bred to be agressive and fight. Only ONE of these three things is not a part of the breed itself.

But you can keep believing that all of this is complete hype - unfounded bias. I hope and pray you never have first hand reason to believe differently.
