"A second approach has been to dampen a patient's immune system response to infection. However, past approaches led to poor outcomes in patients, in part because they sometimes increased the sick individual's susceptibility to a second, "opportunistic" infection."

I used to get lots of bad sinus infections when I lived in Baton Rouge. My ENT (very good Dr.) would give me a shot of antibiotic and a shot of some steroid (felt like I was kicked by a mule). Combined with a z-pack, it usually did the trick.

The problem as stated in this article was the potential damage on numerous organs / parts from steroids, as well as putting you at risk if you have any surgical procedures (even a routine teeth cleaning). It's great if this discovery eliminates the need for steroids.

If ObamaCare gets passed, we can kiss this kind of research investment goodbye. Almost all significant health discoveries comes out of the USA.
