I do not doubt you, but in some Irish pubs on the west side of NYC (Hell's Kitchen>/i> is the name of the neighborhood), ordering a Bushmill's on St. Patty's Day would be looking for some serious trouble.

In Ireland, admittedly different from NYC or Boston, it was not a problem, and I have been in both IRA pubs and prod pubs. Both sides over there like Americans. Then I looked Irish (red hair, fair skin, freckles) and was often engaged in conversation for that reason. I could order Black Bush w/o a problem anywhere I might be, north or south.
