Hardin County Teen In A Coma After Pitbull Attack
WSMV ^

Posted on 03/16/2010 9:45:14 PM PDT by Chet 99

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Allison Walker's mother, Janice, has not left her daughter's bedside at Children's Hospital since Tuesday.

Allison and her friend were riding on their horses on a rural Hardin County back road when three pit bulls ran out of a front yard and attacked the horses.

"The pit bulls just ran out of the yard and attacked the horses. And the other little girl, she got off of her horse. But when Allison started to get off, her foot hung in the stirrup," said Allison's mother.

The fall left her daughter in a coma. The only thing standing between Allison and the pit bulls after she fell was her friend's dog, a chow, who came along for the ride. Walker is grateful. "The chow stayed between the girls and the horses long enough for them to get out and up out of the way," she said.

Walker has been communicating with her daughter through hand signals. "You know mama loves you, she squeezes my hand. You love mama? and she'll squeeze my hand," she said.

What angers Janice Walker is the lack of concern on the part of the owners of the pit bulls. "Why are they so heartless. They haven't even called me to check and see how my child is," she said.

It's Walker's faith that fuels her hope. "God ain't gonna take her now, she's gonna walk out of here," she said. The owners of the pit bulls, according to Walker, received only a citation for not controlling their animals. They are due in court April 6.

The attack on Walker's daughter has encouraged her to change animal control laws in Hardin County. "I'm gonna try my best to have a law, you know, we may have to make it Allison's Law," she said.

The stats I posted specifically identified deaths by dog attacks, not hospitalizations.

More fun from Merritt Clifton:

From the ANIMAL PEOPLE perspective, Starcher should have been charged with psychologically abusing the 9-year-old by taking him on a coonhunt. Coonhunting is a legal voyeuristic behavior, for adults, but so is attending strip joints.

Identified them from what source, exactly?

You didn’t read the information, did you?

Didn't like the source of that information? There are others:

There are other sources of information

I can post more if you like. Note that Pits only make up approximately 2% of the dog population, but are responsible for 1/3 of all dog attack fatalities. Great odds of having someone seriously injured by a pit.

I’m very familiar with that dogbitelaw.com. You might as well be posting from Wikipedia; they’re just as credible. :-)
And what’s your source for that 2% of the population number?

There’s not a resource that exists that you will not ridicule, is there? Read for yourself. Research for yourself for that matter. I can’t help people who won’t open their eyes or minds.

There’s a lot of numbers being thrown around dogbitelawcenter.com, and no atribution that I can find. Am I missing the bibliography page?

800,000 bites per year in the United States that require medical treatment.
$165 million is spent treating dog bites
70% of dog bites occur on the owner’s property.
44,000 facial injuries each year
children comprise 60% of the dog bite victims
The face is the most frequent target (77% of all injures).
Mail carriers are an exception where 97% involve the lower extremities.
Severely injured patients stay an average of 4.2 days in the hospital.
Dog bites cause an average of 18 deaths a year.
(61%) occur close to dog’s home or home of the bitten person.
(77%) injuries are by friendly dogs known to the bitten person.
German shepherds were identified as the breed involved in 44% of all bite cases but accounted for only 22% of license registrations.
Small purebred dogs accounted for less than 20% of bites but more than 40% of registrations.
...The major problem is that they(pit bulls) are frequently (94%) unprovoked.
Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States seeks medical attention for a dog bite.

Nope, still no sources; but look at that, there’s a handy link at the bottom to let me know I might be entitled to compensation! Sweet!

Now, I respect you and your time enough not to post a bunch of opnionated, unsourced, pro-pitbull tripe (and believe me, there’s a lot out there!); the least you could do is return the favor. Why would you post a bunch of infamous, already de-bunked, animal rights/litigous lawyer claptrap and expect us to just accept it?

So, you’re saying that Pit Bull type dogs are not dangerous? Hmmm. The anedotal facts would argue against that. So, all of the statistics regarding dog attacks must be biased and only provided in order to entice someone to file a lawsuit? I was born during the day, but, not today.

Can you source THAT, at least? No?
That's okay, you go ahead and keep wrasslin' with those straw men. It's fun to watch.

I source that with every story I have read in the past three years where someone was brutally mauled or killed by a pit bull - the information is public knowledge and can easily be researched if you were willing. I also source that by having witnessed an unprovoked pit bull attack near my home just a few weeks ago. Straw man? Go back to college and take a course on logic. Pit Bulls, mixed Pit breeds, and a few other similar breeds ARE more dangerous breeds compared to all other breeds of dogs. Notice the period at the end of that sentence.

So, the sources you provide are "Look it up your own darn self(the information is public knowledge and can easily be researched if you were willing.)" and "I seen it happen with my own eyes(I also source that by having witnessed an unprovoked pit bull attack near my home just a few weeks ago. )"

Awesome.

Pit Bulls, mixed Pit breeds, and a few other similar breeds ARE more dangerous breeds compared to all other breeds of dogs. Notice the period at the end of that sentence.

Notice the complete lack of argument at the end of this one.

The most violent dog I’ve ever had was a shepherd/terrier mix. He looked like a small black shepherd.

He was too smart for his own good, jumped fences, bit people, and had a real thing for defending the property and anyone on it.

We put up with a lot of it because the last qualifier was something we thought was great. The jumping fences and disappearing for days at a time we could have done without. He used that to start his own breed. Our neighbors loved us.

I had a friend who told me my dog was an alien. I’ve always sort of believed it.

Are you compiling data on all of these attacks? Or, keeping any records of your own? Seems that some people are demanding statistics that are from a “clean” source, whatever the hell that is. All the sites I find that report attack statistics are being ridiculed by pro-pit bull posters.

can’t say that I am - but there are usually several of these attack stories EVERY DAY. What I post here is but the tip of the iceberg.

On the other hand, the pit bull apologists keep posting the same six year old story of a golden retriever attack in their lame attempt to prove all dog breeds are just as bad.

I have grandchildren that ride horses. They never ride without an experienced adult, no matter how “tame” the horses are.

Be careful to avoid areas that might have off-leash, out of yard pit bulls.

Be sure to use horses which would not rear, if rushed by three snarling dogs.

If the children should be hurt while riding with you, take responsibility; since you blame neither dog or dog owner.

Chet is just the messenger...some think the messenger should be shut up. Was reading about Rachael Rays pits on a pit lovers site....they are all pissed off at her cause her dogs give the breed a bad name...she's afraid that after 5 attacks her pitty might be removed from her..boo firggin who...her lawyer husband is is big time ass covering over the attacks...

thanks chet for the information, might keep someone from owning one of those dogs or a cross of the beasts...the religion of peace dogs....

**However, this story doesn’t pass muster. Why didn’t the girls just run off on the horses? Instead they got off? And of course there is a difference between “spooking” a horse and attacking it. The owner should have been responsible for letting dogs run loose like that.**

If you know horses, it doesn't take much to spook them, even the best of riding horses. It might be that the horses were so spooked, the girls decided they were better off, off the horse.. A spooked horse can also kill you and itself running in a panic..

In Michigan you can kill any dog that attacks a hoofed animal...we put down one when I was raising goats. It was trying to get into the pasture...Perfectly legal...
