A Bullmastiff is a recognized breed, created by a cross between a bulldog and a mastiff. It looks just like a pit, if you don’t know what you’re looking at. And it’s very aggressive.
This story isn't about someone falling off of a horse because of not wearing a helmet. It's also not about someone falling off of a spooked horse because of birds. Yes, I read the story. So? The helmet is no guarantee of safety from injury. The reason for why the horses were spooked is the only compelling argument in this story, period. I know all I need to know about dogs and horses, and I don't need your arrogant pompous attitude. Oh, and the two dogs in SF who attacked the woman and killed her were dogs trained to attack. What is your point?
Pompous arrogance strikes again. As if I don’t know what you seem to think I don’t know. But, a Mastiff looks nothing like a Pit Bull, period. Even for people who don’t know the breed well.
Man, the arrogance of some people. It’s enough to make one scream. I don’t think there is any hope of educatin these people.
Well, I’m certain Chet is THRILLED to have engendered an argument on FR, after weeks of people ignoring his PB articles.
So, I bid you goodnight. Unless, of course, you’d like to tell me who was bitten by any of the pits? Dog? Horse? Girl? Rescuer? I am also certain that if anyone was bitten, we’d have a description of how many stitches it took, where the bite was, the size of the vet bill or hospital bill, etc. So far, no reports of bites.
GIRL IN COMA AFTER FALLING OFF OF HORSE SPOOKED BY PIT BULLS
Any other questions?????????????????
I have a friend that once had a couple of Bull Mastiffs. They didn’t look like Pits to me.
As a lifelong horsewoman, and someone who has taken more than her share of falls from spooking/bolting/green/off-the-track horses, I’ll tell you that no parent should allow a child to ride a horse without a certified helmet. Horses are far more dangerous than bikes. They can run nearly forty miles an hour and jump over obstacles five feet high (which means the rider’s head will be ten feet off the ground); they also weigh more than a thousand pounds, which represents substantially more inertial mass than a bike. And unlike a bike it makes often irrational decisions on its own, to the grave detriment of the rider.
Just last week an international-class young woman fell off a horse during a test-drive in Florida. She was riding without a helmet, and she is still in a coma. So it can happen to any rider, at any time.
Yes, the dogs spooked the horses, and yes helmets don’t protect against every injury. But a helmet does help enormously, as tens of thousands of riders can testify. Encountering scary things on the trail is something trail riders have to anticipate. A helmet is SOP. And though it might not have prevented a concussion, it might have prevented a coma.
Okay. You win. Kill all pitbulls. Now. Plus, kill all dogs that spook horses. Now. Plus, kill all dogs that Chet thinks look like pitbulls. Now.
PS, I was ready to shoot, not the dogs that spooked my horse, but my horse, for being spooked by dogs. A spooky horse is dangerous to any rider, o knowledgable one. Riding horses, trained, are supposed to ignore barking dogs, car horns, birds, etc. And riders are supposed to wear helmets.
And, no, I have no questions for somebody who doesn’t know much.
But I bet they do, to Chet.
I hear ya’ SD,,,
This little girl may or may not live at this point,,,
I guess I’ll never understand those that would blame her
for being attacked...
You're not very good at this, are you? What you are good at, though, is demonstrating ignorance. Care to place a wager on whether the owner of the pit bull dogs in this story will be held accountable, either criminally or civilly?
Who has blamed the little girl?
In a word? YOU! Look back over your posts on this thread and ask yourself what your view of such posts would be if you weren’t the one posting, that the girl was to blame for not wearing a helmet. For some unknow reason you are stuck on stupid here.
“Pit bulls and the owners who either train them to be bad or have no control over them are the ones who have indicted the pit bull.”
The truth sought and found.
When I was a teenager, we had a very violent sheltie. He attacked his mother, and we all got badly bitten, breaking up fights.
Looking back, we should have put him down, or given him to somebody that wanted to try to use him herding sheep.
He was not a good family pet.
I’m not going to make an argument against wearing helmets while riding a horse - obviously I think they are a great idea while riding bikes.
Actually, I do know how to have a debate. We’re talking about horses, dogs, and little girls. Not trail bikes. Hello? You’ve already been called on your trail bike/horse comparison. It’s invalid.
But let’s paint that scenario: You’re riding your mountain bike on a city street, when a Jack Russell runs out and attacks you. The jack russell doesn’t manage to actually bite you, but in your attempt to avoid being bitten by the jack russell, your bike is struck by a car driving the opposite direction. Now, should we still kill all pit bulls?
I think I’m pretty good at this, actually. And your statement that I have demonstrated ignorance is not an actual argument, is it? I don’t gamble, but I doubt that the dogs owner will be held accountable, either criminally or civilly. But will we ever know? Chet doesn’t post articles about pit bulls that don’t fit his preconceived notions.
Name the post in which I blamed the little girl.
As I stated in an earlier post, any dog can bite. Shelties are not typically dogs that bite, but it happens. Labs are also dogs not know to be aggressive, but, it happens. Pit Bulls and similar breeds have a reputation (whether totally deserved because of the breed or because of the way they are trained is a point of discussion). The biggest problem with the Pit Bull is that when they do attack (of which there are lots of cases), they are extremely aggressive and typically don’t stop the attack until either the one being attacked is dead or someone manages to pull the dog off of the object of their rage. They will attack without provocation (I’ve seen it).
Each time you made the claim that it was the girl’s fault because she wasn’t wearing a helmet, while completely ignoring what caused the horses to spook in the first place. You seem to think that only if the dogs had actually bitten the girl or one of the horses would the dogs be to blame for the outcome of this girl’s injuries. Since, according to you, the dogs didn’t bite anyone, then, they can’t be blamed for the girl being injured. Then you go on to castigate the girl (and her parents) because she wasn’t wearing a helmet. If this is not blaming the victim, then what is it????? If you are unable to see the folly of your false argument, then nothing further I say will provide you with any insight. Thus, unless the light comes on, we are at an end here.
