Hardin County Teen In A Coma After Pitbull Attack
WSMV ^

Posted on 03/16/2010 9:45:14 PM PDT by Chet 99

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Allison Walker's mother, Janice, has not left her daughter's bedside at Children's Hospital since Tuesday.

Allison and her friend were riding on their horses on a rural Hardin County back road when three pit bulls ran out of a front yard and attacked the horses.

"The pit bulls just ran out of the yard and attacked the horses. And the other little girl, she got off of her horse. But when Allison started to get off, her foot hung in the stirrup," said Allison's mother.

The fall left her daughter in a coma. The only thing standing between Allison and the pit bulls after she fell was her friend's dog, a chow, who came along for the ride. Walker is grateful. "The chow stayed between the girls and the horses long enough for them to get out and up out of the way," she said.

Walker has been communicating with her daughter through hand signals. "You know mama loves you, she squeezes my hand. You love mama? and she'll squeeze my hand," she said.

What angers Janice Walker is the lack of concern on the part of the owners of the pit bulls. "Why are they so heartless. They haven't even called me to check and see how my child is," she said.

It's Walker's faith that fuels her hope. "God ain't gonna take her now, she's gonna walk out of here," she said. The owners of the pit bulls, according to Walker, received only a citation for not controlling their animals. They are due in court April 6.

The attack on Walker's daughter has encouraged her to change animal control laws in Hardin County. "I'm gonna try my best to have a law, you know, we may have to make it Allison's Law," she said.

The only information I have is from the article, same as you.

And as for cold-hearted, banning a breed is dangerous. Which breed will Chet decide is dangerous, next? My mastiff? My sister in law’s Newfoundland? My daughter’s rottweiller? the neighbor’s St. Bernard?

I actually don’t care much for pits. They are too stubborn, and uncut they are dominant-aggressive. They bond, chiefly, to one person.

But Chet’s jihad against them is a bit unbalanced. And he is really reaching, with this article.

I have grandchildren that ride horses. They never ride without an experienced adult, no matter how “tame” the horses are. Not all kid safe horses, are.

Ever been bitten by a mastiff? Ever seen the damage those teeth can do?

What is the percentage of Mastiff attacks relative to the pit bull? There are lots of large dogs with big teeth. That means nothing.

Seems to have worked out well in England.

PS, Chet posts every single article that has pit bull in the title, he has quite the agenda.

Every so often, I get to wondering what that goober actually knows about dogs, and start posting on his threads.

The presa canario is the breed that should be banned, imho. I see no reason for them, whatsoever.

Mastiffs used to be considered dangerous, the same as pits today. Then, breeders started selecting for temperament, and now they are fairly non-aggressive. Some mastiff breeds are still aggressive, though, and do far more damage than pits.

Whether the dogs concerned were pit bulls or not, the child should have been wearing an ASTA certified helmet if she was riding a horse. Something else might well have spooked the horse and caused it to dump her. And it is a blow to the head, not a dogbite, that’s causing her coma.

I cannot recall a single media report over the past five years regarding a Mastiff attack resulting in serious injury or death. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of pit bull stories over just the past two years. Those stories are in the media, not on FR as part of someone’s alleged agenda.

If a group of pits actually attacked a couple of girls on horses, they should be put down, just as if they were shepherds, rotties, or labs.

However, this story doesn’t pass muster. Why didn’t the girls just run off on the horses? Instead they got off? And of course there is a difference between “spooking” a horse and attacking it. The owner should have been responsible for letting dogs run loose like that.

I was attacked once by two dogs - a shepherd mix and a hound. Fortunately some neighbors came to my aid. When animal control came by, they attacked the animal control guy also.

My guess is if a mastiff mix attacked someone, it would be reported as a pit.

Several times I’ve seen stories about “pits” and going to check the picture, it ain’t no pit.

1) it was because of the attack by these pit bulls that the horses spooked, resulting in the girl falling from the horse.

2) there is no guarantee a helmet would have prevented the head injury. I received a concussion after a fall from a mountain bike (closer to the ground than a horse) despite the helmet I was wearing (which was sheared in two from the impact).

My African Boerbull Mastiff attacks me if I try and make room for myself on the couch or if there are no burglars immediately available:)

A Mastiff mixed with a pit bull is not a Mastiff - It’s a Mastiff/Pit mix - which would account for it being reported as a pit. You are aware that there are several breeds of pit bulls?

How about the two lawyers whose presa canarios attacked a woman in their buidling, and killed her? They’re in jail, now.

Did you read the story at the second (?) link? It said that the two girls had brought three dogs along with the two horses they were riding. Evidently, the little girl in the coma didn’t have a riding helmet on, either.

Do you ride? I used to, now it’s too dangerous for me, although I’d love to. Falling off a horse is one of the easiest things in the world to do. It happens all the time, and people die from it. Getting a foot caught in a stirrup is a very dangerous happenstance, but it happens fairly often, too.

The last time I was thrown, I was riding a mare bareback, and a bird flew out of a bush and spooked her. Should we kill all birds?

Thank you for your service to our country. Please, learn something about dogs, horses, and people who ride without helmets.

Oh yeah. I can easily see how a Mastiff could be mistaken as a Pit./sarc directed at another poster.

I agree. This story, either version, does not pass muster. They were riding in the country, they had two horses, three dogs. Some dogs came out and started barking. No report of any dog, horse, or person being bitten by any of the dogs at the scene.
