In the interest of accuracy, I would point out that "The Hurt Locker" was more even handed than was Avatar, which will become one of the highest-grossing films of all time. I broke down and saw Hurt Locker this week. It wasn't bad, and the political undertones - to the extent that there were any - were very muted. Avatar, OTOH, is nothing but a leftist, anti-American, anti-Free Market, anti-Marine Corps love fest.

I'm afraid that they'll only lesson Hollywood will learn from these box-office debacles is that they must better disguise their movie's anti-American slant - or at least make the anti-American protagonist either a 10-foot tall aborigine, a vampire or a pirate as those are the only kinds of movies that seem to sell today.

Except that The Hurt Locker actually bucked the trend.

It was one of the rare contemporary war films where the good guys were courageous American soldiers and the bad guys were barbaric Muslim jihadis. There were no scenes of U.S. soldiers committing war crimes, rapes or torture thrown in or a bunch of political dialog equating Bush with Hitler. It was just a simple, action-packed, nail-biting film showing America's best doing brave work while the Muslims were booby-trapping children.

It's a shame it flopped at the box office. We could use more Hurt Lockers.
