I think he overreached, all right. A powerful man with an idea he was the nation’s Father; his biography shows that he realized this later on. But the idea of the feds owning any land? We the People own the land.
The problem is WE THE PEOPLE ARE the Government or should be.

Teddy Roosevelt and preserving lands for public hunting, fishing, hiking, etc., are not two of them.
Not true the federal gov't OWNS MUCH LAND..
You know, instead of the STATES owning their own land..
Even then, if you can be taxed on land you own...
